Steadicam

Hey everybody,

I was thinking about getting myself a steadicam system. I've been debating between that and a new camera (I have a DVX now). I do a little freelance work, mostly sports, but want to become a cinematographer. I know my DVX inside and out, and just though I should expand my knowledge a little with a steadicam. I got to try on a Steadicam system while I was observing a set (all the people were really awesome there: super friendly) and I have to say that it was awesome. I wanted to get one that I could use for many uses: large digital cameras, film cameras, small form factor HD cameras, etc. I was looking at the Glidecam X22 since it will hold cameras from 10-22 pounds. If I have a camera under 22 lbs, I could always add weights to make it heavier, to meet the specifications. My question is, will 22 lbs be enough for what I want, or should I looks for a bigger system.

Thanks
Joe

Joe, I'd recommend taking a workshop.

It's a fantastic crash course in the skills you want to build, and it'll give you a million more answers than any internet forum can on what would be the right rig for you (if any!).

I would agree with Mikko. Take a workshop if you are at all serious about getting a steadicam rig. It's not just something that you can buy, read a manual, and produce awesome results... you need training. At my workshop they offered several rigs at discounted prices, and they were all bought.

Will you ever use a camera that weighs more than 22 lbs? I purchased a glidecam 4000 and the advice to get training is well heeded. I read the manual, watched youtube videos, read forums and I'm still struggling. Get some training before you put down your hard earned cash for one. You'll know what you can expect and what to look for when you go shopping for one.
