Steadicam/Stabilizer

Can someone direct me to a thread where inexpensive stabilizers that will work with the HVX may have been discussed? I'd love something for $500 or under if such a thing exists. Thank you!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. You definitely seem knowledgeable on this so your thoughtful recommendations would be great. A dry sense of humor is just super but I'm hoping to coax some help out of you.

And you are fully aware that for $500 it will be made from cheese and chinese newspapers?

The Steadicam Merlin will support the HVX200 (assuming you arn't going heavy on accessories)

You can probabaly find one used for under $500

New they cost a little more. Best bang for the buck for small steadicam for small cameras though.

Mikko:

Many thanks. At this point I think I really only want to mount the HVX alone. Is the Merlin the only worthy one at the low end? Also, I understand that there was some kind of upgrade (plastic to metal). Should I avoid the earlier one if I come across one used?

Performance on both versions is the same.

The Metal one will hold a little more weight though (of course it's getting heavy to carry for long shots at that point) so it is better should you come across a situtation where you have a choice.

I have the plastic one and it's worked fine for me. I've flown both a HVX200 and a EX1 (among others) on it without trouble.

Nope.

...Not that footage from a Steadicam tells you anything about the rig anyway. It's like reviewing footage from a tripod to judge the head: It won't tell you much.
