Preliminary report, just received. Total mind xxxx.
1.8 at 18-35 on super 35, 22-35 on 4k, 35 on full frame.
Fantastic out of focus backgrounds wide open with nd during daylight.
Game changer for me. I want to get into the 4k with stills function on this camera, This lens gives me a fast 28 and for the first time a 40!
(What, no 1.8 90? Send it back!)
Feels like a zeiss, seems parfocal.
Amazing lens.
Amazing camera.
Love it more every day.

Fantastic! I will check this out, I have been looking into a zoom. Though, primes are still my love.

I'm very interested in hearing more about this combo -- or better yet, post some footage ;-)

Does the Digital Picture guy have a 1dc? "Luckily" I do. He is not thinking 4k 1.3 or super 35 1.6.

Isn't that the reason that we bought the Idc and not the camera that he tested the lens on? Try the lens out on yours, you know, see for yourself and then let's compare notes.

There are plenty of fast wides for full frame. There are not for 1.3 or 1.6

The point is not what it does at full frame 35- take it or leave that as a bonus.

It is what it does at 4k 1.3. I am getting clean from 25 to 45. That means 25, 28, 35, 40(45) at 1.8.

Plus full range on super 35- 1.6 - basically 29 to 56.

$800 bucks to get what good fast primes might give you...arguably.

As to your "alternative".... I am buying the 24 and 35 is canons to go with my 70-200 is , as I don't like the 24-70 or 24-105 is f4 zooms, just too slow. I tried the tamron 24-70 2.8, but didn't like the way it balanced on the camera. I am hoping canon gets its 24-70 2.8 is'd.

Have B&H send you one, If I'm wrong you get thirty days to get your money back. If I 'm right it will be the best bang for the buck you could spend on this fantastic camera.

Hi lightstrum, no I don't think Bryan (the Digital Picture guy) owns a 1DC. I think he shoots with the 1D X and 5D Mark III and is mostly concerned with stills only. His site is a unique resource for the type of lens and camera reviews he does and lens testing that he publishes. I was glad to see him publish a test of the 18-35 vignetting on full frame, since no one else has done that. Since you have the 24 IS and 35 IS in addition to the 18-35, you have everything covered. It's just my personal preference to use lenses that work in any shooting mode but I'm glad the 18-35 works well in S35 and 4k. It's another great option to have.

I'll admit I am biased towards Canon lenses over 3rd party lenses because of AF accuracy, CPS, and the vignetting and chromatic aberration control but sigma has made great strides in the past year or so with the new 35mm 1.4 and 18-35 1.8

You might be interested in the new Blackmagic super zoom. It works on their existing and soon to arrive cameras, and Arri, Sony, Canon and MFT. It is 12-240 T1.4 parafocal, built in ND and weighs 17 ounces. It is scheduled for delivery tomorrow for 300.US.

HA -- joking aside, I would still like to see some lens manufacturer releasing a super fast & short zoom lens -- ignoring all edge aberrations and distortions -- just giving us a funky zoom which is super fast.

If that is your aim, then why not make one yourself? Surely there are designs available to make it easy enough to do.

Sorry what does "1.8 at 18-35 on super 35, 22-35 on 4k, 35 on full frame. " means?
This lens is not constant f1.8?
I had used the 20, 24, & 28 f1.8 for many years does this give better PQ or faster focus speed or less distortion?

It's constant 1.8.

Lightstrum is saying that since the Sigma is a 1.6x lens, it vignettes on the 1Dc 4k 1.3x crop at the wider angles. He is basically saying that if you don't want serious corner light falloff, you will want to start using it at the 22mm focal length in 4k mode. If you use it in full frame mode, only 35mm is usable.

I'm curious if the above mentioned focal lengths are clean, or if there is still some vignetting, although acceptable (which is subject to opinion).

The lens is relevant again now that Cinema5D did a BMPC vs 1Dc comparison with this lens. I might have under estimated the lens' usability in 4k mode...

This lens comes up now and again for me. I would very much like to see some footage from the 1Dc-Sigma 18-35-combo, in the 1.3x 4k mode.

Doesn't have to be creative work. Just go through the focal range, from a tripod. Use fast shutter for "ND" and let's look at vignetting and resolution.

Any chance?

I will test it when I get a chance at 1.3x crop. On full frame, I consider it unusable for video. Sure, it doesn't have a hard vignette, but the distortion on the edges of the frame are really bad.

Here is my test of the Sigma 18-35mm on the 1DC vs the corresponding 24L and 35L.

I would use it on S35. It has less vignetting that I noticed on my Canon 17-55 f/2.8. I might use it on 4K, but not below 24mm. I would never use it on full frame. The distortion and falloff are pretty bad. It might be better at high apertures, but then I would go for the Canon zooms instead.

Much appreciated! Thanks!

How was the test setup exposure wise? Same camera settings for all lenses? The Sigma images seems a bit darker, not taking vignetting into account, but the 18-35 transmission values are pretty good according to DxO.

I just did another small test shooting a grey background to make sure I didn't accidentally have the Canon lenses at f/1.4. The results are correct. At f/1.8, the Sigma lens has much less light transmission. I also tested the lenses at f/2.8 and got the same result. I don't know what to think. It looks like it is almost a stop less light.
