C100: Starter kit

I'm a big fan of the 17-55 lens on the C100. It costs more than it should, but not as much as other lenses that are built better with a similar range. I have 6 lenses, but if I'm running and gunning, it's just a choice between my "indoor" lens (the 17-55) and my "outdoor" lens (the 24-105). I could shoot a whole doc with these two lenses with no problem. Although I prefer to use either the 70-200 2.8 for interviews, I also really have been loving using the Rokinon cine 35 for them, which if you scoot back a bit works great for a 2 up. Lenses are paint brushes, it just depends on what kind of painter you are :~)

Yes, a Ninja 2 is not really required but if you are considering it then it's a lot less than $1.5K:
A Ninja 2 is US$695 which contains everything you need to go (batteries, charger, caddies) except for an SSD and an HDMI cable (and possibly a hood).
You can get a Ninja 2 + 240gb SSD kit from B&H for US$875.
If you want to go cheap then use an HDD for less than $100 but watch out for vibration! I had an older laptop 500gb HDD I removed when upgrading my MacBook and it worked great shooting an all day event on a tripod, and didn't cost me a cent extra.
 
Personally I´m holding out for the Odyssey7. It will of course be MUCH bulkier and I´m not even sure where I will position it and if I would need a small rig to support it, BUT I believe that if I need a beefier codec, production will call for larger setups anyways. The Atomos basically has it´s own niche, if they would update the screen and keep the price, I´d probably buy it in an instant.
 
Odyssey7 is interesting.

I have a C100 down as my next Camera (already have a 5D3 and thinking of selling my Ex3).

I was going to buy a Zacuto Monitor but if I went with the Odyssey7 I would have a great Monitor with Recorder included for 1000euro.
 
The Atomos Samurai Blade's screen looked great when I saw it at NAB. Then I saw that it didn't have HDMI. GRRRR! I asked why and Atomos responded that it was designed for RED and high end cameras with SDI. Makes no sense to me.
 
Designed for RED? It doesn't record RAW, 4K, or 4:4:4. Yeah, that doesn't make sense.

I don't think you would use a recorder if you wanted RAW and 4K from a Red since that is available onboard. It would be for HD acquisition.

its for those who would buy their HDMI to SDI convertor along with samurai blade. so they can have the blade working for c100. and hopefully one day he rents a C500, and just plug that blade in, WOOLAA~!

I have the original Samurai (same screen as Ninja) and it is pretty weak. Honestly it's a recorder with a screen thrown in as a bonus. I would never trust this screen. However, it does have a really good peaking control....so you can see what is in focus. This has saved my butt a few times. It looks really weird turning all sharp lines red....but at least I know its in focus.
