Start your engines - Firmware v 1.2 for PMW-F3 is now available

OK. Figured it out. Dual Link and Gamma setting has to be off for HD SDI and HDMI to work. Always had it on 1.5 422 for the A SDI to work.

Has anyone had any luck with spotting the vertical histogram enhancement? Like a menu item or button to turn it on or off?

Maybe I missed something about the use of EI-log...
First, EI-log seams to be active only when LUT is enable. The notice says S-log is 1600 ISO, and EI-log is 800. But when I choose 800 iso, changing from EI-log to S-log doesn't change anything. And I didn't notice any DR improvement.
I don't want to record anything with a LUT applied. I know the 1.3 firmware will enable a SDI out with LUT applied, so what's the proper use of EI-log ?
Thanks for your lights...

yea so....

EI does nothing. Its a LUT adjustment.

Who cares.

EDIT: OK so i see one possible good thing. its a PREVIEW of what your chip will see if you were to boost gain. essentially giving you a preview. treat it like film. the film is 800, and youre choosing whether you want to "push it" to the exposure index of 1600, 3200 etc.... while keeping your base exposure @ 800, and retaining all your DR.

Is it worth doing the 1.2 firmware update or should I wait till 1.3? Do you need to do 1.2 in order to do 1.3? Sounds like 1.3 is going to fix some issues with 1.2.

just upgraded - yes EI does nothing it seems to me as well. It just works on the LUTs, huh. Also I can't figure out how you can adjust the white balance in S log. I know you go intot eh camera menu and there is a s log white adjustment area - but what does this do? Oh well, keep on dreaming.

EI lets you see what a post push of the gain will look like while the actual recorded signal remains the same because the sensor and processing stays in its native 800 iso setting.

By staying at 800 ISO the chip gathers the most data even though the recorded images may look like crap, but you can see on the monitor that it will look great.

In those extreme instances it was designed for the (for example) grossly underexposed images recorded will look better after gain is pushed in post than it would look if you increased the gain in the camera. A stop is the doubling of light, it can look a whole stop better.

I hope that made sense.

Duke, how are you using it now, without a 444 recorder from the A/B ports then you either need to record SLOG straight at 422 (ISO 800) from the monitor SDI port or apply the LUT which you can change with EI but then that change will be recorded and will no longer be saving the pristine untouched signal? It seems to me that this will only be useful once 1.3ver arrives but maybe I am missing something. This is the reason I am waiting for 1.3 before getting S-LOG.

I upgraded. Engineers often do little tweaks and fixes "under the bonnet" that aren't announced in an update. It may or may not happen at Sony, but there's no harm in updating (besides the doubling of boot time the update brings)
