C100: Start Up Time & Memory Recording Settings

I find that with dual slot or relay record on, from the time you turn the on knob until the camera is ready to record, it takes about 12 seconds. With dual slot and relay record turned off, it takes about 9 seconds until the camera is ready to record.

I really like dual slot record, but since it costs me 3 seconds, I may stop using it for some shoots. I like to use primes for run n' gun so changing lenses quickly is important. Three seconds may not sound like a lot, but often I've found myself with my shot composed and ready to go, as action is happening, but still waiting for the memory to be ready to record.

What settings are you using for memory recording?

I use double-slot recording. Probably don't change lenses as often as yourself but when I do I don't turn the camera off! Never has caused a problem so far... (touch wood!)

Im doing the same as you man, I have primes only ! (but for reception I have the 28-300 lol)

and yeah, my suggestion is think before you switch, if you switch a lot, it means you need a zoom lens.

I bet your jobs are mostly events and docs, Im doing the same thing.

for chaos event, I use 24mm, and change when I think I got 90% of shots on this lens. the last 10% can be abandoned if you dont have time.

I give you my example - wedding

morning, arrive then use 14mm on slider to do some elegant low angle (pros dont like it and clients love them) shots.

100mm for nice ring closeups when you have time

after that swtich to 24mm to catch all the dialogues

key for this part is to arrive as early as possible

--
ceremony, exclusively 35mm or 50mm depends on the church size.

--

photoshoot, 14mm on steadicam

--
reception, lovely 28-300

---

again, switch only if you think its necessary, if you just need 1 shot from this specific lens and you dont have a lot of time, then avoid it, be safe first.

creativity is your second choice if you dont have confidence to safely cover the whole thing

Apart from the bride prep, my 24-105 stays on the camera for pretty much the whole ceremony and reception. All my weddings are low-light affairs but f/4 is still OK with the C100. Changing lenses during a fast moving event is a stress full affair I tend to avoid.

agreed, I put my self on the cliff by using exclusively primes is not because of the nice apertures of low light, but my framing creativities.

I find myself filming no difference than a house daddy when using zooms. Primes forces me to move around and be active. thats why I use primes.

In that case you can simply put some duct tape or super glue on a 24-105 and turn it into a prime. Need a 70mm prime? Voila! ;)
