Star Wars III

Ok, I'll admit it.

I saw it.

And I liked it.

So I'd better explain myself:

I thought the dialogue was stiff. If Lucas actually had someone come in and "fix" it up, as I have heard, I can't imagine how gawd-awful the original screenplay must have been. Obviously George is surrounded by bung-hole sniffing syncophants who do nothing more than fulfill the function of yes-men to a self-made billionaire. Not that anyone with the courage to intervene would make any impact anyway; his ear is 24 karat gold-plated tin to any real criticism by now. How do you tell the the most economically successful filmmaker of all time that he sucks? And why would he believe you?

Lucas should have begged Kirschner to direct it and Kasdan to write the screenplay (the Empire Strikes Back team). Had they done that, this movie would have been one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time, even eclipsing the Empire as the best Star Wars film.

Movie making is all about illusion. Therefore, I disagree with 90% of the posters here about the CGI. My impression was and is that ILM is now so good at what they do that imagination is the only limit to cinematic scope and vision. Everything is possible. I thought the CGI was absolutely perfect; rich in texture, depth and realism. The ticket price to see this piece of cinematic art on a big screen is worth it for the CGI alone.

Having said that, I also liked the Godzilla remake for its CGI. But I went into that movie expecting a stupid plot with lots of camera mugging by Matthew Broderick. Which is exactly what I got. But my wife and I both had fun and laughed ourselves silly though it because our expectations were properly calibrated.

Revenge of the Sith was harder to anticipate, however. Episodes I & II were so horribly written and emotionally shallow that it looked as though the magic was completely gone from the franchise. But still--as a fan you hope and pray that someone or something could intervene and compell George to make the last installment meaningful. And the hype was that this one would be better.

It was better. A little better. Amidst the wasteland of terrible lines and wooden performances, some real emotion was conveyed. The final scene with Vader and Palpatine was devastating--to wager it all, everything you believe in for one goal, and then lose it all--that realization is a crusher. Padme's funeral was actually far sadder and profound than her death scene, but then again there was no clunky dialogue to ruin the moment.

Without changing any visual element, casting choice, or plot device, this film could have gone from an eye-rolling CGI-fest to a milestone, Academy-Award winning piece of film art--if only a real director and screenplay writer could have been employed. Natalie Portman is not a bad actress, but she doesn't have the screen presence or experience to pull meaning out of the sixth-grader dialogue. Heck, even Liam Nesson, a fabulous actor, couldn't hack his way though a Lucas script convincingly.

That about sums it up Alv.

A shame. Could have been a great series and instead its reduced to crap by Episode 1.

The gift of life has been wasted on you, Jim.

You had the chance... and you threw it all away. For shame.

Here is a link to the best review of Star Wars I've read yet. Granted, I'm a Star wars geek myself, but this review rocks!

Link: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=episode3

Eeeehhh... sounds like someone had a bad day... or life... I mean common it's disputing about plot of the movie with magma swords and space farmers... The movie is fun and that's it! I like it for it's incredible world and strictly good/evil situations...

//btw. I'm frustrated!! Someone ripped off a left mirror in my car! And he did it so clumsy he scratched a window and bend this thing the mirror is connected to (don't know how it's called). Someday I'm gonna kill all those car-destroyers!!!

I read a recent review tha said well;

It made note of the original SW films having a central 'Hero and Journey' theme whereas the new ones have no hero's and a journey into darkness. There is nothing to route for nor against as we already know what is going to happen.

I would rather have seen 3 more films continuing on from the originals instead of the prequels (No, not with the original cast members or characters).

I think the new films have catered to the SW Geek with the whole Jedi thing. I mean; I never gave a flock about the Jedi thing as it is. It was lines like "A good blaster is all you need kid." or "All that magic and hocus-pocus" and "I call it luck." To me, that was cool. Not all this 'Force' crap.

Oh well; they suck.

And what is with Lucas' having the droids make 'cartoon' sounds like "Ow!" with they get bumped into or hurt? That's just bad stuff. And the CGI wookies were horrible. I think one of the many defining suck moments of the new ones were when Yoda picked up a lightsabre and started battling. Horrible. Just keep the puppet on a pedestal and let him give advice.

And I still cringe thinking of Pod Racing and that little annoying child. What a waste of 2 hours that was.

Did anyone feel like that Wookie scene was just too damn.....forced. It's like he threw it in as a shout-out to the originals, the problem is that it totally didn't need to be in the movie.

Yoda,Yoda, Yoda.....you know, I was actually enjoying his presence in the prequels when he just used the force, but he lost me when he started flippin' around in the air and crap (I mean, never mind that he hobbles around like a cripple). And before I saw it, people ranted and raved that they could feel the pain that Yoda felt when he first knew of what had happened---what a crock! I wanted to laugh it was so pathetic! He's no Gollum. I felt more emotion out of Team America.

Yes. Thank you!

What about the lame ass lines inthe opening sequence?

Anakin "Here's where the fun begins."

Obi "I've forgotten how much I hate space travel."

I mean; is this a joke? Is that some homage to Han? Totally unnecasary and removed me further from the world.

Lucas sucks. I guess he recently APPROVED INDY 4.

Great. Lucas approved it. Considering they have gotten worse each new film. I don't even want to know what this script is like. I am sure it will pamper to George's taste. They are going to blow it.

Here it is! Indy 4:

Indiana Jones and The Weapons Of Mass Destruction!

It's Octogenarian Indiana Jones in his trusty droid wheelchair C-Q-T-pie!

Indy and C-Q-T-pie journey into a Black Hole generated by plot vacuums of The Star Wars Prequels. MISSION: to rescue a younger George Lucas who could write decent scripts. Here he encounters a Clone Army of Saddam Husseins building nonexistant weapons of mass destruction. Actually, they are still at Skywalker Ranch held captive by an older, pandering George Lucas. Will Indy & George Lucas Younger escape to the Real World and bring Balance to Hollywood Mediocrity?

INDY and GEORGE LUCAS Younger (in unison): " I have a bad feeling about this!"

hey! that is a cartoon! not a movie. all of the scenes were recorded in a studio. that is sad. :( it just lost the point of the film

Thank god someone agrees with me people are praising but i hated it visually were nice but other than that dead.

and the cop outs like erasing the droids minds so they cant remeber any of this so they cant tell luke that vader was his father. i mean that is stupid so man cop outs. i just want to choke lucas.

Empire Strike Back was the only good one but hey it start wars it want meant to be taken serous right. Stole from kurosawa anyway . goes to watch every kurosawa film*

I saw it last night (finally), and I liked it.

No great musings on the weak or strong parts of the film (which it had both); I thought it was fun. Simple enough, huh? :)

I didn't read all the posts, so forgive me if I'm restating things everyone else has said...

I love Star Wars... I've grown up with Star Wars... I was a totally obsessed fan for years. Up until Episode I came out, where my interest in Star Wars started to fade. Ep1 came out on my 14th birthday (same with EpIII), and I tried as hard as I could to like it. I thought it was going to be the best birthday present ever. I even fooled myself into loving it. Even though I fooled myself into loving them, my interest faded because deep down I really knew how much these movies really sucked. But now as I mature, I see how much I really dislike these past Star Wars movies. I mean, I like them, I think they're great because they expand upon what I love so much, but I feel that Lucas has destroyed what he has created. The reasons the other Star Wars were so good (most notably Empire Strikes Back) was because they were neither written nor directed by Lucas. How many shots do you think this movie had where there wasn't CGI in the frame? By the way, if you look at Lord of the Rings, the CGI looks ten times better IMO. Lucas is supposed to have the greatest resources available to him in the world. I mean, Yoda looks alright for CGI, but he looks like he should be in that stupid Madagascar movie. He looks unbelievably animated. I miss the puppet Yoda.

Back when I was 13 years old, waiting for these new Star Wars to come out... I thought that when these movies come out, I could die a happy man when I grew older. Now that I'm older, I just feel like I was cheated. Episode III had the potential the be the greatest film ever made, but it just fell extraordinarily short of what it could be. Lucas's directing choices are some of which I'll never understand. The poor acting on Palpatine's part when he fights Mace was just unforgivable (especially Mace's scream). I literally laughed out loud when Palpatine would scream and transition to that voice. The way he fought with the lightsaber was humerous in itself. Same with Obi-Wan with his hands on his hips waiting on the ship, shaking his head in shame at Anakin. The dialogue between Padme and Anakin made me cringe (literally). "It's because I love you" "No, it's because I love you". Who says that??? Lets not forget Vader walking off the platform like Frakenstein (I was literally shaking my head when I saw this). "Noooooooooooo!" Could it get any worse than this? I mean, come on! Any wannabe filmmaker can look at this and think, "Wow, if Lucas just did a simple rewrite and directed this scene a little differently, it would be that much better."

I didn't write these, but they are hilarious and true (sorry if they are reposted):

The inconsistencies and plot holes should be enough to piss any real Star Wars fan off. Don't blind yourself with your love for Star Wars to admit how crappy these films are. I just watch them and tell myself it could be so much better. I have to admit, though, I do still like these movies just because I love Star Wars and I like knowing the history, but I'm not afraid to admit how bad they are and how much better they could be. If they were just made right now without the original Star Wars that we all love so much... admit it, all of you. You'd think they suck.

The only way I really like these movies is looking back on these movies and giving the story meaning to myself. In order for me to actually like these movies, I have to look outside the movie and find the meaning of the story. For example: I'll listen to the soundtrack of EpIII from the battle between Anakin and Obi-Wan (probably the best musical score I've ever heard) and replay in my head what the story means to me and the event's meaning, not what you actually see on film. It's the story, not the crappy dialogue, acting, and directing. That's where it is, and that's the only way I can truly still embrace Star Wars anymore.

Sorry for the rant, and I know I don't make much sense. It's hard to explain how I feel about these last 3 Star Wars. I'll understand if none of you have no idea of what I'm talking about.
