Star Wars III

Yeah, I saw it and it just didn't do it for me. I thought the script was horrible and some of the composites didn't look too great. The only uplifting part of the movie was seeing chubacca and Yoda's CG clothes and hair. He was impressive looking. The special effects was a bit too much for me. Eh, just wasn't feeling it. Sorry all you SW fans out there.

PS: My bro got his panavision hat signed by Mark Hamil. That was cool and he was a pretty nice guy. We also got an interview with him as well. That was probablly the highlight of the night.

:undecided

lol What are you doing with the interview? I'm curious to read it.

I've only heard two people say bad things about this movie... everyone else has said it was wonderful... to each his own, though :)

Ok... it's 3:40am my time and I'm back from StarWars premiere. And I've got one word for you: genius! It was really incredible! I am a huge fan of old trilogy and a "medium" fan of episodes I and II (although I can't say they were terrible <- the same kind of magic but on an other ground). But this one really kicks ass! Heyden (or whatever his name is) finally started getting what is this "acting" all about, ewan was amazing and I'm not even mentioning Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine!

//I think the only possible way to show my true fellings is to say that I just bought online tickets for a show starting in 6h :) so I'm going to sleep right now :)

Ok.. it's 3:41 and I just came back from the midnight premier. I thought it was just OK. I felt the acting from everyone was acceptable except Anakin and Padme. Flows nicely into Star Wars though.

It's 3:28 am, just got back.

Sorely dissapointed, I was.

No time to point out specific gripes, need sleep. Expect a rant in the morning.

There's a new Star Wars movie out? Hmmm.

Guess I'll have to check it out when it comes out on VHS.

~reservoir~

Caught the midnight showing as well. I was glad to see that the acting was pretty much on point this time. I have some issues with it right now, but am going to check it out again this evening and will see if i can resolve them. Everything went by so quick last eve I couldn't take it all in.

SPOILER:
Oh, and on another board there was a guy saying he felt that Palpatine was trying to say he created anakin in the opera scene. I'm not sure what he was smoking but I didn't catch the slightest hint at that. Palp's was clearly using his visions of Padme's death against him to lure him to the dark side, not saying he created anakin :/ What a boob. He had me all fired up for nothing.

If you read the "Making of Episode III" book, in the first version of the script, it is written that Palpatine says:

"Ahh, but you know it's true. When you clear your mind, you will sense the truth. You could almost think of me as your father."

This was a little too much, even for me, so I like it better as a "you'll never really know" situation.

*Minor spoilers. Or maybe not...*

Just came from the theatre... I'm almost speachless - it was more powerful than I was hoping it would be. I won't forget watching Obi-Wan walking away while Anakin is burning alive any time soon.

For a movie of this caliber, it definitely was a challenge to live up to the hype ...

It was "ok" for me ... the CG was amazing, but I felt the acting was kind of well ... subpar.

Here's my feeling on everyone (or a lot at least) being disappointed with this new trilogy: We are comparing a childhood Starswars experiance with an adult Starwars experiance. If you had never seen the original Starwars until now, you'd have the same problems with it as you do these. My point is, I think it's perseved as "cool" and "hip" to hate this current trilogy. You all need to admit that you liked it, because so many people hate them that it's not cool anymore. Get it? To be cool now you HAVE to like it. Forget it, I just wish people would enjoy it for what it is. I'm just surprized that for a group of filmmakers (who should know how tough it is to make a film) we are sure critical of others efforts. And by the way, just because you had Chewbaca undies when you were five, doesn't mean the movie belongs to you. Unless you are an investor, Lucas owes you jack. There, I feel much better!

There's some irony to that statement from my point of view. I didn't start finding fault with the current trilogy until I looked at them with a filmmaker's eye. But anyway, I haven't seen Episode III yet, so I'll refrain from any further comment.

The problem with the prequels for older fans is that they are comparing it to originals they saw over 20 years ago. You'll never recapture the feeling you experienced when you first saw Republic ship cross the screen followed by the giant Imperial cruiser. You'll never experience the feel of seeing the lightsaber for the first time and learning about Force. Star Wars opened up a whole new era of (visual effects in) filmmaking and nowadays you can't be impressed as much as you were in '77.
If Episode III came out in early 80s (save for the cgi), it would be considered a classic on par with ESB now. Seriously, the movie on it's own, even with the cheesy dialogue bits and some poor acting, is simply great. It came as close to recapturing the magic as it is possible. It's also a very sad film and the end is truly heart-wrenching...

Interesting Post; but totally disagree. Could not disagree anymore.

This isn't about being hip or cool and surely isn't about being owed anything. The new films are not that good. They are less than memorable and have zero magic. This isn't being 'old' whereas the magic is lost. There are a string of films over the last 5 years that have captivated and inspired me in the same manner as the orginal Trilogy did and still does.

This has nothing to do with 'a group of filmmakers' being critical of others efforts but Lucas continuing to tamper and alter and tinker with the films and putting out these new ones that just S U C K.

Testament:

My 5 year old prefers SW and EMPIRE and JEDI over the new ones. No hidden agendas with this kid.

How can I enjoy it for what it is when it isn't anything to enjoy? I take these new films like I do any other; I either Like it or I do not. And liking a film because it was HARD to make is moot; all films are hard to make and are efforts of thousands of hours of people collaborating and sometimes taking YEARS to release.

They suck man. They're worth watching once, maybe twice. But nothing to be inspired by.

These new ones are made for children and teenyboppers. And whats with C3PO saying lines like "I've seemed to have lost my head?" or whatever he said...

Just bad stuff. And half the damn film is being CGI'd. Get off the Bluescreen stage George and build a real set.

I speak for myself and I never wore SW undies.

saw it this morning, and i must say it was awesome. i think he did a great job of tying everything together, and setting up episode 4. seems like they could have built up anakin's turn to the dark side a little more, it was kind of un-climactic when he turns.

did anyone else notice that when they raise vader up on his little bed with his mask, it looks like it was shot 60i, and the action just looks weird? i thought it looked strange.

as a long time star wars fan, i thought it was great, and will probably see it several more times.

They're making an Episode 4!!! Just kidding.

John- I do belive that there are those out there who are honestly not very impressed. My wife has seen them all (less III yet) and she thinks they all suck. My point is, many of us are comparing it to a childhood experiance and making them out to be worse then they really are. I agree that some of the magic is gone. There is no Han Solo charactor and that makes a big difference. The CG is a bit much, but this forum is all about new technology and techniques and experimenting. So lets be careful to not sound hypocritical. No offence to anyone, it just seems to go with the "ego" I see on this forum from time to time. Sorry.
