Star Trek

No idea what purpose a cold water turbine would serve on a starship, other than to give the newly-buffoonish Scotty his Willy Wonka moment.
I haven't seen it yet, but I was afraid he was going to do that to Scotty's character. I like Simon Pegg a lot in Shawn of the Dead, and in Hott Fuzz too... but I have really enjoyed Scotty for a lot longer. You don't know how many times a day you might hear "I'm doin the best tha I can, Captain!" around here. Even my Bird says it. I was going to name my second born M. Scott, but couldn't slide it by the wife.

Capt. Quirk: "I'm givin' 'er all she's got!"

Mrs. Quirk: "Yeah, well, 'all she's got' isn't enough, Scotty!"

(sorry, dude, but the setup was there, had to run with it :) )

Anybody here pissed off from seeing Star Trek in IMAX at an AMC and the screen not really being IMAX size? It is bigger than a normal screen but not IMAX, AMC should be finned for false advertising or buy true size IMAX screens.

JDS just noticed you now live in Austin, do you hang with Luis C much? For some reason I thought you were moving to LA.
All the time. It's hard to tell where I end and he begins.
Kidding. I can't even lure him out of his hovel with free food more often than not.

He must be really busy, I offered him a reserved seat to the Star Trek pemiere in Austin 5 or 6 weeks ago (the one with NEMO :) the sold out one and very first screening to the public in the USA) and he couldn't make it. Next time I'm going to show up at his door and drag him out so I'll need your help with his address, some duct tape, BBQ and beer.

funny you should say that.... http://azizisbored.tumblr.com

Nikki also blogged about it: http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/is-imax-digital-scamming-moviegoers/

Funny because my date said the screen looks small for IMAX, I kind of blew it off and told her not to ***** because it was a pre screening before it opened and it was not like I had to pay for the tickets but I'm hearing lots of other people complain about it. If I paid and it wasn't a special pre screening I'd want my money back! It's BS and not real size IMAX screens at AMC.

LMAO! Not quite like that, but still funny :)

My oldest boy, James T. is always getting in trouble, and of course you will sometimes hear "Dammit Jim!".

Star Trek' breaks Imax record as purists grumble

LOS ANGELES, May 12 (Reuters) - Imax Corp (IMX.TO) said on Tuesday its "Star Trek" screenings grossed a record $8.5 million during the film's first weekend, even as some purists complained that the company's big screens were not big enough.

The hotly anticipated science fiction movie garnered $79.2 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices over the weekend, and 11 percent of that figure came from Imax screens.

Imax said that was significant because its screens accounted for less than 2 percent of the venues for "Star Trek." The old record of $6.3 million was set by "The Dark Knight" last summer, although that film played on 94 Imax screens, while "Star Trek" beamed in on 138.

The "Star Trek" Imax contribution shows that moviegoers are pleased with the company's theater experience, Chief Executive Richard Gelfond told Reuters.

"There's no indication at all that the word of mouth is anything but positive," he said.

But on Tuesday, the company also faced some criticism from a Hollywood actor who wrote in an expletive-laden blog that he felt cheated when he paid $5 extra to see "Star Trek" in Imax and saw the movie on a smaller-than-expected screen.

"These new 'Imax' theaters are really just nice digital screens with good sound, but they are not Imax, in that they don't have the huge 72-foot (22-metre) gigantic screen which people would expect," said Aziz Ansari, a co-star of the new NBC show "Parks and Recreation."

The actor's comments echoed earlier criticism from purists who say Imax should re-brand its smaller screens in multiplexes to differentiate them from larger Imax screens, found mostly in museums and science centers.

Sizes vary, but a typical Imax multiplex screen could be 28 by 58 feet (8.5 metres by 18 metres) , while a larger Imax screen could be 76 by 97 feet (23 metres by 29.5 metres).

Gelfond countered that Imax has no re-branding plans because "Imax is Imax."

"Does American Airlines brand a (Boeing) 767 (flight) differently than a 727? We wouldn't put our name on it unless it lived up to the 'Wow!' factor and to the Imax brand," he said.

The company has been moving its smaller version of Imax screens into multiplexes for more than five years, and it has 371 screens worldwide, with 250 of those in commercial venues as opposed to museums and science centers, the company said.

Imax screens in multiplexes are always the largest in that venue, and with digital remastering they offer higher picture quality and other enhanced features. "When you go to an Imax theater you get the most immersive film experience on the planet," Gelfond said.

Boy that logic falls apart quickly. American Airlines is not known for a particular size of aircraft being part of the experience - Imax is. Airlines offer the speediest travel around. That's what you pay so much more $ for over a bus trip. The analagy would hold up if he said "would American Airlines brand what they were doing differently if you went to the airport and a shuttle took you to a bus that would still get you there, only it would take much longer? But it would be the best bus experience you could have?" Y es. They would have to market that differently, as, oh, I don't know, a bus ride, maybe?

Part of it this may stem from interpreting "branding" to mean "brand". Yes it can still be IMAX brand but you have to call it IMAX MULTIPLEX or something.

In fact, I have yet to book a flight where 'equipment' - that is, the model of aircraft being flown - isn't information that's included in the booking process.

And yeah, if I had bought a ticket somewhere aboard an A-380 and arrived at the gate to find that I was going to be seated on an ATR-600, you can just bet I'd be pissed off, too.

It's worse because these new screens aren't even using an IMAX film format projector. It's 2K digital. I go see IMAX not just for the screen but for the higher resolution image. Yeah, most films including Star Trek have just been uprezzed to IMAX via software (except for TDK which actually had IMAX shot portions), but it's still a major rip-off and misleading. From wikipedia--

The intent of IMAX is to dramatically increase the resolution of the image by using a much larger film frame. To achieve this, 65 mm film stock is run horizontally through the cameras. While traditional 65 mm film has an image area that is 48.5 mm wide and 22.1 mm tall (for Todd-AO), in IMAX the image is 69.6 mm wide and 48.5 mm tall.

I'm sorry to hear that about Imax. Sounds like they are slutting their name to make a few more bucks. Imagine National Geographic taking the same route on quality. Shame on Imax.
