I love me some anamorphic lens flares, but from what I've seen so far in all the Star Trek trailers, I don't know if I'll ever need to see them again after watching this film.

Either it is a small DVD recorder that is recording from a video tap, or it is there in case they want to run a scene from a DVD of a TOS episode or from one of the original crew films.
Most of them (apart from CGI shots) were done in camera using flashlights, there's an interview with JJ here -

It took me a second to get that you typo'ed "Nemoy". A Romulan commander in this is named "Nero". That's who I thought you meant and was about to say - no that's old Spock.

Man, this movie is getting so universally praised I'm worried it can only be a let down...It's gonna suck! It's gonna be worse than Final Frontier! It's going to be so bad Dreamworks will have to make Galaxy Quest 2 because of all the new material they'll get to make fun of!...There, I feel better.
