Star Trek Discovery

So anything goes ?

If it's good? Yes. If it deviates too far I'll just think of it as a totally independent show that loosely relates to the themes of Star Trek. If it has spaceships I'll at least give it consideration. That's my new criteria.

I'll probably watch the first couple episodes out of sheer curiosity, but I'm not setting expectations high.

I'm much more excited about this:

How long has Seth Macfarlane been trying to play Shatner?

I liked this when it was called Galaxy Quest, and I even liked it when it was called Quark. Let's see if Macfarlane has enough ideas to stretch this one out.

Honestly, looks at least as good as the last four Star Trek tv series, but I am really not a huge fan of anything that isn't the original show. I've tried to like TNG, but outside of a few isolated episodes I don't care for it.

I liked Voyager. In many ways flinging them off to the far side of the Galaxy set them up to be a bit more like the original series than the other later variations. Also, I went to college with Jeri Ryan.

Looks amusing enough at first glance, but you pretty much know what you get with McFarlane. Sustaining it will be the big question.

Ouch. That pilot ep. is going to leave a mark.

I guess CBS didn't think that a decent script was important. Michelle Yeoh is so good in so many things; how could they do this to her? Dialog as stiff as a 2x12.

And who doesn't love Klingon spoken with a mouth full of marbles?

Anyone got any ideas about the use of unmotivated Dutch angles? What the heck was that about? I could almost hear the DOP and the Director screaming at each other. The wrong side lost that fight.

Does anyone think that an actual ship's bridge would be that huge and awkwardly laid out?

Does anyone think that a warrior race would dress like that?

Does anyone think that Star Fleet would have a procedure to put a first officer in a space suit and send her out unprotected and unarmed alone into space --- instead of using a probe? Really? Guys, that's just so weak. Or maybe the ganja was just so strong. IDK.

Does anyone think that the Klingons would signal in space with a light? So what? -- the guys on the home world will see it in 40 or 50 years? If Kronos is really pretty close -- and if it is, that's a tiny "empire" the Klingons have. Did these writers not understand what faster than light travel means? The warp drive is what makes Star Trek... Star Trek. It doesn't get any more basic than that. How can the writers not get this?

Needless to say, I lasted about 40 minutes before I turned it off and went and found a book to read. I wanted a decent story, well told, and I wasn't going to get that from this CBS disaster.

But you know, it *did* have good production values. I'll give it a star for that -- one out of 10.

Did it bother anyone else that when number one is out there with the integrity of her suit broken and we go to a commercial break, that we next see her in sick bay? And then get exposition to explain it? With all the money spent on this thing, couldn't they have shown us how she was rescued and not told us?

Im watching ep 2 and then probably cancel the 7 day trial amd wait til the season wraps to come back and binge it. Unless its really so godawful that I cant make myself get through it. I thought it was okay. Not great. Depends where they go with it. Ive always found Klingons to be a generally uninteresting race. I wasnt that big of a fan of Enterprise either...I like the show/series best when it's got intriguing plotting involving cool sci fi stuff, not so much whatever enterprise was doing.

I find war and space combat uninteresting. War with the Klingons is a lame story line. They had a wide-open universe and basically an infinite number of story possibilities, but they had to go with war with the Klingons. Er, "Klingons."

That's way before getting into the ridiculous incongruity of the tech.

I don't really care about the tech and how it fits into the timeline and the cannon and whatever. They are never going to make a show that looks like 60's Star Trek. I want a compelling drama with interesting characters first and foremost and the pilot was kind of unremarkable in that respect. But this whole pilot was mostly preamble, so the next episode I think is going to be more indicative of what the actual show is about. I didn't really love the lead character though, so it has that working against it from the start. Michelle Yeoh was a more compelling presence. Even the chickens*t science officer was more likeable. I'll keep watching for at least a few more episodes, but I can watch it on basic cable I'm already paying for. I definitely would not pay 10 dollars a month.

Perhaps not, but with The Orville, they appear to have made one that looks exactly like 1990's Star Trek...

I tried to watch it. I can't get past Seth MacFarlane's smug face and it didn't seem that funny...And I was never much of a fan of TNG, especially not the flatly lit hotel lobby aesthetic of the enterprise.
