Star-shaped lens flare

Hate to ask a stupid question, but is the star-shaped lens flare normal for the HMC150? Or is this just an example of CCD smear? I noticed it last night filming some fireworks and also the day before with some glare off of the car. I'm assuming this is normal. Thanks for the input.

Obviously this is an extreme example.

Thanks,

that's normal, its a result of using a CCD over CMOS. Which is why the HVX did it as well, as it also uses CCD. I still perfer a CCDs global shutter even if this happens to bright lights.

Thanks for the input. I figured it was normal, just wanted to make sure before my return period runs out.

i think the reason it does this is so you dont just have a huge bright blob of light, its more "artsy" and more appealing than the aforementioned blob hahaha.

I think the shape of the star comes from the blades of the iris, five blades equals a five pointed star.

Cheers

Light streaks caused by CCD. Yes CCD have issues as well. Not sure what corrects this but I can point my 500 at similar objects without getting this extreme effect. Barry Green is the most knowledgeable as to the cause.

Just saw the same thing in numerous shots on NatGeo's "World's Toughest Fixes". At one point, the cameraman pointed his camera at the sun and had exactly the same effect, 6 points and all.

That doesn't look like any CCD I have ever seen.

This is a smear, normally vertical in nature

That looks like the iris blades. Was your aperture way closed down? It looks like something takes with an iris north of f/8 or so. Easiest way to tell is to point the camera at the sun again and open and close you iris. If it is the iris (which I will bet money on) then the points of the "star" will rotate slightly as you open and they will rotate the other way if you close it.

Yeah, I don't think it's smear either, but I do see it all over the place. Just for kicks, I pointed my Nikon D300 at the sun and snapped a shot. I got the same thing.
