I hacked my GH1 a week ago. Since I don't have fast SDHC cards and I still want to use the 2 cards I bought for my GH1 ( Transcend Class 6 8GB and Sandisk Extreme Class 4 16 GB) I didnt want to push the bitrate setting to high.
I discovered on my first tests that settings that would work on FHD (without the native 24p hack) would make SH fail. I like to use SH because I can do very nice slomos at 40% so I wanted 720 to work.
I followed jobless and cbranding suggestion of using lower bitrates for the H and L settings to make 720 work and leave FHD at high bitrates. That way I could achieve wonderful 1080 24p footage in FHD and still be able to record 720 60p footage on the H and L settings (leaving SH setting only for low detail, low motion footage as it makes the memory card fail easily).
After several tests changing the H and L settings that made the recording stop due to card speed (message on screen and recording would stop, no freezes or footage lost) I came up with the following settings:
FHD/SH bitrate: 40 MBPS
H bitrate: 22 MBPS
L bitrate: 18 MBPS
Overall bitrate: 44 MBPS
Limiting bitrate: 50 MBPS
That way I can use FHD with 40, 44 , 50 settings (that is somewhere between B and C settings) to achieve beatiful mud free footage. I wasn't able to make the cards fail with this settings no matter how much I waved and zoomed my camera pointing to high detail footage.
SH makes the cards fail easily, even just walking around in my back yard.
H setting works 99% of the time and is the mode I intend to use for 720p as it is almost mud free and only failed if I would zoom in and out like crazy using the kit lens.
L setting at 18 MBPS never failed no matter what I did, is a little better than the original 16 MBPS the unhacked camera had in SH mode so it is still usable. I will use it only if H setting fails.
This footage I shot with the kit lens and my hacked GH13 using the H mode, it didn't fail once, even though I was zooming fast all the time to find the butterflies. Also, I barely found mud, none in parts that I intended to keep. Almost every shot was slowed down to 40%, so the camera movements are 2.5 faster than they appear. Hope you like it.
