SRW-9000PL for $8900

Yes, that is a good point - because if the boards are not there the chances of finding some are going to be slim I assume. And I presume they're no longer made , and even if they are I think the 3 boards are about £25,000 worth?!

$3,500 too much???!!!!

Well, it already had a bid, so the minimum bid is actually $3,600. And then a 15% (bank/cash) or 18% (credit card) buyers premium applies. Which can bring you to $4,248. Then it's subject to sales tax, which is as much as 8.875% in New York State. That brings you to $4625. Then if you're not based in New York, you've got to arrange a separate company to pick it up for you, pack it, and ship it. Likely cost... $250. So now you're at a total cost of $4875. And that assumes that your bid of $3600 sticks.

The operational hours on the unit are incredible, but the auctioneers also basically waive all responsiblities and sell AS-IS, WHERE-IS - meaning you have very little recourse if there's a problem, even immediately upon receipt.

And there's no viewfinder, and no specification of whether option boards are installed.

$5000 would be a great price to pay for this kit, but I already have an F35 and need to dedicate my funds to other equipment, so yes, $3600 was too much for me. I had personally hoped it would have had a lower starting price and been ignored. Since it passed my threshold, I shared.

Has anyone tried the 800 ISO mode on the SRW-9000PL? Can anyone comment on how usable it is? (compared to just rating the F35 at 800 ISO and pushing the image a stop in post).

Cheers

Does the 9000pl have an 800 slog mode? Or are you referring to the 800iso hupergammas that we also have in the f35?

The literature I've found says 800 ISO SLOG. And there's an old interview with a Sony tech who says it was specifically designed to be cleaner than shooting the F35 at 800ei.

I thought it's same sensor as F35?

On side note, this Mercedes video shot on 9000pl

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYR1DJ4fzMU

Same sensor, and with the three optional upgrade boards you can get most of the same processing too (everything except 12-bit output). Has the added advantage of 3G-SDI with the HD-SDI upgrade board, so you don't need a dual-link recorder or a multiplexer to get 10-bit 4:4:4 or 10-bit 4:2:2 at 50fps.

The 800 ISO SLOG is a separate gamma curve that they designed specifically for the SRW-9000PL apparently.

That video is actually the SRW-9000 which has the same 2/3" chip as the F23, not the 'PL' which had the S35mm chip from the F35.

OR... you could get an Aaton Penelope Delta. (srsly)

There are like, what, 5 of these in the world? No idea if the image it records is worth a poop (have heard rumblings it's OK-ish, but less than amazing. I have no way of knowing if that's smoke or fire). But you gotta admit that the rare camera nerd factor is off the charts. Makes owning an F35 seem downright mainstream by comparison.

I like how the description is info for the Penelope film camera, not the digital Delta. They should have dug up the copy that I wrote on the thing.

If I had $50K sitting around that I needed to burn from a drug deal gone bad or something, I'd be sorely tempted. The image from the camera is quite pretty, and it really was a joy to use. Aaron never got the whole jiggled-sensor-for-perceived-extra-resolution thing worked out, so it would be "just" a great regular 4K camera with an optical viewfinder and a perfect balance on the shoulder.

For those who followed the soap opera back then, this is the camera that got me banned from RedUser for awhile. I'd been warned not to mention competing brands but couldn't imagine RED feeling any threat from Aaton. The French would have been thrilled to sell as many Penelope Deltas in its entire run as RED was shipping each week at the time.

Fond memories...

Mitch,

There is that "Make an Offer" button. I think it's calling to you Mitch.

No seriously, I was there for the demo at Abel and the room was packed to the gills. The air conditioning couldn't keep up as I remember. I asked a question on the methodology of randomly moving a camera sensor to simulate film grain. Turned out to be a trade secret. It was a groovy idea though...
