squig's MKII epic

Hmmm. Never done an HDMI to VGA conversion. I did Component to VGA...

Squig did you get that HDFury majigger to work? It won't require external power?

there's no bus power out of the 5D but I was thinking maybe the usb signal could be split to separate power and enumeration maybe through a hub? I have a 7" LCD lying around that I just need to power, it's a bit heavy compared to the glasses but it will work as a last resort.

At least Vuzix are talking about HDMI, should only be a matter of time and they won't look so Jordy.

Anthony, are you referring this model here?

If you want to try the VR920 glasses Vuzix has a 30 day money back guarantee if you buy direct. The only problem with that is the street price is much lower.

Here's the rest of the bits you will need to use them with the MKII (thanks to ydgmdlu for compiling it)-

To get the best image signal, buy the HDFury to help you convert DVI to VGA: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10114&cs_id=1011402&p_id=4559&seq=1&format=2

You'll need the following to connect the camera and VR920 to the HDFury...
3 ft mini-HDMI to HDMI cable: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10242&cs_id=1024201&p_id=3644&seq=1&format=2
HDMI to DVI adapter: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10419&cs_id=1041902&p_id=2029&seq=1&format=2
VGA gender changer:http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10416&cs_id=1041602&p_id=1191&seq=1&format=2

You end up with a really cumbersome wad of adapters but I couldn't find a more compact alternative and you can either strap it to a stabilizer or put it in a pocket.

You will also need a battery pack with a USB port. I bought the macally (link in above post) having some technical difficulties with it at the moment. There's some 4AA battery packs with 5V USB ports on ebay like this one- http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=300262614354 that should be OK. I'm going to get one as a backup (it might even work)

Isn't this enough in order to a HDMI route?

yeah HDFury gets power from the MKII, it has a funky blue light.

My panasonic anamorphic adapter has arrived. This one has been slightly modified, it came in 3 separate pieces! bloody ebay! :furious3:

On a better note I got the minolta to EOS adapter with the glass, I'm using it with a minolta rokkor MC 50/1.4 and a sigma 15/2.8 fisheye. So far I haven't noticed any degradation of the image due to the extra glass in the adapter but I have further testing to do. This fit of the adapter is much better than the nikon to EOS adapters I've tried so far.

M42 adapter has also arrived and fits pretty well too and is mounted to my russian beauties the jupiter 9 MC 85/2 and tair 11a 135/2.8. All of the adapters still have a tiny amount of rotational play on the EOS mount so I'm thinking of some kind of rubber gasket option to get a solid fitting so I can focus anamorphic adapters without any rotational movement.

na that model only has composite and svideo out. The first pair I bought are composite and are only just sharp enough to be barely useable. however that one you linked to is higher res and look stealthier so I might end up with them if I can't get a VGA pair that work.
Which is which? I am lost.

The VR920 is VGA 640x480 and not functional until I can figure out the USB host problem. I'm hoping a 2 downstream to 1 upstream USB Y splitter cable and maybe an iPod or iPhone to drive it with a usb battery pack.

The AV310 widescreen has composite inputs and 428x240 resolution. it is useable for focusing and framing but only just and only when there's no other option IMO. I'll do some more testing with these while I try and get the VR920 working.

These might be viable- http://www.vuzix.com/iwear/products_wrap920av.html only composite inputs but higher resolution than the AV310 and they don't look like you walked off the next gen set.

Thank you.

To me, the problem with the wrap920av model is that I cannot use the new ML firmware. Only HDMI is possible.

Is it possible to get composite to HDMI with this solution you posted here...

I don't know how to get a composite signal with that configuration. They did mention in the email that they are aware of the demand for a HDMI input option so hopefully they have something in development.

If you're going to use a display device with a composite input, then just use the AV-out jack on the camera. There should be no difference in signal quality.

What we're trying to do is avoid using a composite signal path, as it's bottom-of-the-barrel as far as analog signals go. Not only would it be 480i, but it would be the lowest quality 480i that you can get.

I would suggest that the most important thing to determine right now is whether or not the glasses will properly display the VGA signal that's being output by the HDfury. After all, finding a portable way to power the glasses will be a vain effort if they're not going to work ultimately.

So if you haven't done so already, please try connecting the glasses to a USB port on a computer so that you can test them with the camera. And let us know how that works.

Yeah I did, mentioned it in a previous post. Much better resolution than the composite glasses and bigger image. Color temp is way off though and not adjustable.

Ok I might have a solution. I should be able to run the VR920's through the USB port on a netbook. There are some cheap one's for $150 that run linux, weigh under 2 pounds, around .7kg with 7" displays so they are pretty portable. I just have to check with vuzix if there's any particular OS requirements and I need one that runs with the display closed.

Failing that I'll get a 7" LCD with HDMI in and suffer the extra weight on the steadytracker.

Hey Squig, could i request a favor from you please?

Would very much like to get some raw video at 30p off of this camera to play around with in my editor. Mcgee sent me some and it seemed to work fine when i did the 24p conversion, but there was a basic static shoulder cam with little movement in the frame so it was difficult to tell how the smooth factor was.

If possible, could you please upload some raw footage of pans and stuff with a lot of movement? Maybe a 10 second clip?

Thanks man!

uploading now....it's gonna take 90min. I gotta get some sleep, I'll post the link when the baby wakes me up in about 6 hours.
