squeeze not unsqueezing

i burned my first dvd(wide screen) last night. Played on the laptop as widescreen but when i played it on the tv( 4:3 sd) it filled the 4:3 leaving the footage squeezed. why is this so? i thought it was supposed to play letterboxed. Is it the dvd player?

Also if i output back to tape...will it play letterboxed? (going to try that later if i can just would like a heads up)

i am not 100% sure of this but i believe if you want to fill a 4:3 television you should output to 4:3 with letterbox

Depending on the program you use to author the DVD (iDVD, I believe, does not have this option), you need to tag the DVD as anamorphic. Most all modern DVD players can output an anamorphic signal as letterboxed if they know that the DVD is anamorphic and that the monitor is 4:3.

You might also check your DVD player's anamorphic playback setting to see if it knows that's what you want it to do.

well i really dont want it to fill the 4:3 as it is doing now, cuz it looks squeezed (or maybe i'm not understanding u correctly). I would like it to play letterboxed on a 4:3 but full screen on a 16:9 if it were ever to go on 16:9 tv. Maybe its my dvd player, another dvxuser advised me to see if my dvd player has different options, and if so then i should put it on "letterbox". so i'm gonna try that.

edit: response to jamie
