Split Screen??

In the Vegas preview window, we have the ability to do a split screen preview. Essentially looking at uncorrected video split with corrected video.

Is there a filter or plugin that will allow us to actually render a file that way? It would be incredibly helpful in showing clients the effects of filtering and color correction if we could do this side by side view.

Thanks for any thoughts.

What I would is make a copy of whatever piece of film your trying to accomplish this with, and put it on a separate layer, but put them right on top of each other so they both play at the same time. Then, use the Event Pan FX thing (you know, that thing with the big F) and you can zoom out for each one and make them both fit into the screen fame. And then apply whatever effects you'd like to one of them.
Does that make any sense?

I do that different way, but close,
two video tracks, copy the footage, set them to start wt the same time (obvious) one track with effect one is plain, on one track I mask left side of the screen, on the other right, add another video track with text media labels to explain where is what...
to make it look good you have to be very precise and do not overlap masks,
This way it's easier to see the difference between footages compare to two windows in the active window
:-)

It's a lot easier to do it with with two tracks and a crop on the clip on the upper track. Far less work; no need to be as precise; better preview playback; less render time.

yes,

better preview playback;

not to my eye

less render time.

no,

Just another option,
PerroneFord, try different on a short clip, choose the look you like,
It's not about how difficult or time consuming it is, it's all about the look you want to achieve.
You make it once, you use it at least for a year

Well,

I've gotten it to work using the track motion. Now to figure out how to do it with masking. The Vegas 6.0 book by DSE has this in there, but of course I left the book home!

So, I have the mask created, half the video shows, but the bottom layer won't show through the mask. I am assuming I've messed up the parent child relationship. Anyone want to lend a hand?

Well,

I finally got this figured out yesterday. Douglas Spotted Eagle's book give a nice example on how to do the split screen with a mask. But leaves out one CRUCIAL step in making it actually work. I spent the better part of an hour trying to figure it out. Changing the top layer from "normal" to "mask" did the trick.

Now that I have done this both ways, I think I prefer the mask for what I was trying to do. But the track motion was a valuable lesson for something else I'll need to do soon.

Thanks to you both.

Well, you don't need masks or track motion. To make this:

All you need are two events on two tracks:

And then go into pan crop for the upper one:

Making sure to set the buttons/options as shown circled in red.

Learning to mask and to use track motion are valuable skills. But for this particular use, I think both are overkill.
