Spies Girls

IAnd Rebecca and Norm were great. In passing, I don't think I've said too much about Miss D, and want to confirm that she was a classy pro who followed the suggestions of even this crappy director. She is very, very funny (I think there was a few posts earlier in this thread about talented dramatic actors being skilled at comedy - and I think Rebecca evidences this theory). And truly talented - so any other director out there who wants an actor with amazing range should sign her up. You won't be disappointed.

Or maybe she just looked so good in comparison to Norm. (Sorry. Couldn't resist:Drogar-Love(DBG):)

Awww. Thanks, Brian! However, I whole heartedly disagree with the crap director comment. Brian is a complete pro and a pleasure to work with, all! Anyone would be lucky to work with him. :)

I thought this was hilarious and a blast to watch. I loved all of the DVXuser references especially Norms and Rebecca's cameo (you guys were both hilarious, good job). I seriously couldn't stop laughing the first time I watched your movie.

The CIA/FBI joke wasn't terrible, kind of reminded me of British humor, it wasn't brilliant but it isn't worth cutting all together. It's one of those gags that would work well if you developed the guys character a little more and he kept saying off-beat things like that.

Not sure if people mentioned it but there is some masking lines visible during the car hit (which was another hilarious reference by the way), the mask lines kind of dance along the building in the back ground.

The two main actresses did a great job. You could tell they were having a blast being those characters.

Good job. Bucket Man Rules.

Because I am a 3 post member, I unofficially declare Spies Girls my favorite of the fest! Well done Dahopa, kudos for stepping out of the Fest box, with something unique. Oh did I mention Erik, Texture, Paulsen is my husband!! Thanks for returning him in one piece

Congratulations and good luck! Weeshooter

There was some really funny stuff in this film! The Norm/Rebecca scene was ingenius because you've created a DVXuser world where different characters can pop up in different movies. Brilliant.

Thanks Jeremy. Much appreciated.

Regarding the CIA/FBI joke, it plays better with the long version where we set up Agent Brandon properly (he comes across as an enthusiastic guy who truly is smart and well-informed - to the frustration of the Assistant Director - and so when he gets the agency's name wrong it's a little payback for the Ass't Director and a justification for the reaction shot). And British humour has figured rather large in my development, so I'll need to watch some more American sitcoms to make a better transition.:Drogar-Love(DBG):

Yeah - I saw the mask lines in the rotoscoped car hit scene, too. I was hoping that people would just assume it was a fast-moving cloud, but apparently I couldn't fool you. I noticed that late in the day and simply couldn't go back to fix it. You're the only one to comment. Hats off.

As for the two "Spies Girls", yes, they both had a blast. Of course, I had to extend the shooting schedule by about 50% to account for the re-takes when ONE of them would repeatedly break up the other (and I'm not mentioning names, Nic) and force yet another take. And in that regard, I loved the line in the boardroom scene where Nic turns to Lauren and says "I like bananas too" and Lauren says "Have a seat" (and I think it was also Lauren's idea to be sitting there eating Brianna's bananas). Totally ad-libbed on their part. Great timing. Another reason to hope that directors give actors freedom and choices and LET THE CAMERA RUN.

Same for Ward's (Agent Jarred's) scene. Seriously, Ward was adding so many elements to his scene (playing off both Nic and J.C.) that I was sitting by the monitor literally biting my knuckes trying not to laugh out loud and ruin the take. He was killing me.

So to you directors out there - trust the talent of your actors. Let them play. They can really improve scenes beyond expectation. And as the writer of this, you have no idea how cool it is to lay a foundation and watch the actors take it, run with it and make it better. You'll know when a scene is cooking.
Hence the concept of leaving one's ego at the door when shooting.

WOW! Thanks, Joan.

And you have no idea how much that means given that I know that you're the more talented member of that household.:Drogar-Love(DBG):

Which makes me wonder (having seen some of your own remarkable footage and editing) ... when are we going to see something from YOU in these fests? And I happen to know a very talented guy that lives very close to you who does incredible music. You guys could be unstoppable!

Thanks Matt. Yeah - now you mention it, I was always a fan of the old TV series where they would cross sell one series with another (like when Batman would interact with the Green Hornet - and yeah, there is no question that Kato could whip Robin's ass).

I must say that even though I have stated that this will be my last formal DVXUser festival entry, the concept of a humourous "cross pollination" incorporating elements of previous entries is very appealing to me. So who knows?

Cheers.

Brian, most if not all of this has already been covered, but I'm simply relaying the notes I made several days ago after immediately watching it:

Dialogue was difficult to hear at times, to the point that I wouldn't have known what was said, had it not been for reading the script. Laughed at a LOT of points, for example when the girl was savagely cutting the banana, the same girl we saw in Dramafest ... where she killed her lover .... some symbolizm, perhaps? :) The gunshot of the girl talking was GREAT, though I wish her reveal had been AFTER we heard her talking (say for example if she was full on moving her mouth vs. only hearing her thoughts). Along that line, I was a wee bit confused by the ventriliquest reference, as I thought we were hearing her thoughts, but if she was actually talking, then it would have been good to see her lips move just a tad, to make Jody's line that much funnier? I dunno, you're the master of humor, so I'm just throwing out stabs at that one.

NICE car hit!!! I felt Norm was talking WAY too fast & mumbling ... golly that guy SUCKED. Loved the appearance of Bucket man ... didn't see that coming, since it wasn't in the script, lol. Would look forward to seeing the longer cut, as I think it'll help certain scenes & roles come out that much better.

Funny (I guess to you) to have that clown, Norm, appear again at the end, but it puts you over the limit by 3 seconds ... so, YOU LOSE! Or is it that you put the blame on Norm for putting you OVER the limit, so he therefore is the jerk. Nice ... always have to have the upper hand, don't you?

Altogether, some really funny moments ... very funny indeed. It was a pleasure working with you, and enjoyed every moment of the process. Especially playing shuttle/driver to your drunken Canadian cast & crew after the shoot, lol.

Normy, Normy, Normy.

Nope. Not over the limit, you weenie. Check out Larry's rules post: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=958121&postcount=31

So I purposely edited to 12 frames under the limit.

Sorry. It's that damn legal imprinting again.

And yeah - I guess I always do have to have the upper hand - but it's really not that hard.

Hope you can make it up for the wrap party - and the public premiere showing of the Spies Girls BTS reel. Bwahahahahaha.

(And in order to defray production expenses - yes, I will shortly be marketing a DVD of Norm's out-takes. Some even taken during shooting Spies Girls. And I have Releases in hand! Tee hee.:Drogar-Love(DBG):)

This brought me back. It showed my Dvxuser age. I love all the cameos. This is also the first movie where i saw someone shoot the VO. perfect!

Wait until you really get to know us. Talent isn't the only thing we are full of!

We'll consider the challenge :violent5:

Bring on the wrap party! I definitely want to see some of Norm's out-takes! Oh, wait....I'm in those....never mind. :embarasse

My Thoughts:

I'm afraid that showing this movie anywhere else outside of DVX will most definitely not make any sense. HOWEver; those that have seen all these references will laugh your ass off like I did. I thought that street looked mighty familiar and when norm and rebecca showed up... I almost peed my pants. I do however; think you should have cut it right away and got out there there instead of lingering on the briefcase. I liked the two atresses. Its funny because I just scored a previous movie with one of them as a principal character. The woman with the eye patch. Eh. Not so much.

I can't say it made much sense, but it was a fun little show. :)

Cheers!
/j

One of the things I did notice about Jodi's character is that the eye patch kept changing sides. Nice little detail and freakin hilarious.

Hmmm, I don't know about the wrap party. I'm trying to weigh the ROI of making a 12 hour round trip driving just to SEE me getting grilled in front of everyone on screen vs. just hearing about it after the fact. :undecided: If this thread has been dedicated so well at my expense, I can only imagine what the BTS would be like ... especially with that frickin' signed release form!

Thanks D. Yeah, cameos are fun. The VO gag was also my little commentary on VOs generally.

Yeah - the party is on the radar screeen now. As for Norm's outtakes, he's getting an entire segement of the special BTS feature. He'll either laugh, or plant an axe in my skull.

Thanks Justin. Again, this was solely aimed at DVXUsers (AKA "the Market" - see earlier post), so I would be astounded if anyone else ever saw this. Or would want to.

Yeah - we had fun with Rebecca and the Normeister. Not sure what you mean by the "cut it right away" suggestion, but we needed to tie up the storyline by resolving the briefcase and its contents. Believe it or not, we actually had a bit of a story line here.

Ahhhhh. Somebody finally noticed. Thanks for that. You win an extra drink at the wrap party.

And just who said anyone's going to be talking to you after the wrap party?

And you're concerned about a 12 hour round trip to one of our parties? Clearly you haven't been to one of them before. And it usually takes attendees about 12 hours just to make it home after anyway, so what's your problem, bud?:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Oh.....the release form. Doh!
... and we'll need another (slightly modified) one signed in advance of the party. Either that or we're not going to cover any bail bonds you might require the next morning.:Drogar-Shock(DBG):

Thanks for that. You win an extra drink at the wrap party.

While I too am impressed Rebecca picked that up (I certainly never noticed), I've got to step in here & intervene, stating I think the extra drink MIGHT not be the greatest of ideas you've ever had there, Brian.
