I just might have to get this DVD released today. I loved Titanic but also know people either love it or hate it. So, let's kick that dead horse. How can you not like Titanic and what story would you have told?

There needs to be another category:

Yes. It was a cool flick, but I'm only buying the Special Edition because I never bought the normal release.

I'd have to see what special features it includes, but probably not. I'm always astounded by the lack of special features included in so many dvds these days.

I will consider buying it because I already own it, and it deserves an anamorphic picture and DTS sound, which the original release does not have.

Titanic is cinematic sappiness on estrogen therapy. Talk about a chick flick. Luckily they inserted a shot of Kate Winslet's breasts in the middle of it to remind all the guys in the audience that were still males. Once the credits began to roll, I abandoned my girlfriend and immediately fled the theatre. I had to score some steroids to restore my hormonal levels to their natural state.

Needless to say, I'll be taking a pass on this one.

i would have liked more of a story with Kathy Bates character Molly Brown, she was a very interesting person in real life

which reminds me anyone know the movie about a pianist(TIM ROTH) who has a piano duel on a ship he never leaves.the ship rocks back and forth and the piano is sliding as he's playing awsome! i know this is a different subject, sorry i just had to jot this down before i forgot

it is not a bad movie, but today it is a bit out of date, so if you watch those digital and non-digital effects...it is just like a comedy

Agreed. I'll probably buy it at some point because it was a good enjoyable movie, but I also like Cameron and want to see all the extra stuff. Especially if there are a lot of behind the scenes and effects stuff.

I wouldn't go that far. Sure, limitations are apparent, viewed from a current perspective, but it's not like a "comedy."

Chris nailed it for me.

I always hear the 'It's a chick flick' spin but damn, once that Iceberg hit's it's an adventure.

I find the 'love story' refreshing (In this era of action adventures and spy thrillers) and find myself routing for the characters survival. I find myself loathing the characters of Frances Fisher and Billy Zane (perfectly played by them). The action sequences and tension are incredibley done by Cameron

I find this to be a near perfect Hollywood Popcorn Film and deserving of all it's accolades. This is filmmkaing like they should always do it. Grand in fashion.

I'd say "yes" to both. Chick filmish, but intelligently as to create enough dimension to broaden the audience. It might not have had much of a budget if it were proposed as a "story of a big boat the hits an iceberg and kills a lot of people".

Add the romantic element and character development and you suddenly care (even chicks) about what happens once it hits the iceberg and the adventure begins.

Yeah, I agree, very much in the tradition of classic grand Hollywood productions, and the retrospective telling of the story upon discovery of the sunken wreck was a nice open and close. Big, adventerous storytelling.

I think if you can love this film and in another sense entirely love "Sideways", you've got a pretty good balance in what makes great story. When it comes to spending a fortune on production and cast, it would be great if Hollywood made more films that played as well as Titanic.

If you're on the other end of the production spectrum, and relying solely on script, performance, directing and basic but beautiful cinematography, then Sideways is a bench mark.

I'd like to see Giamatti in Dicaprio's role...delivering the "king of the world " line.

I still don't see how the original version (which I own) had no specials features on it. Regardless of how you feel about the film, we are talking about the biggest money-maker of all time here (a record I don't see being broken this side of 2020, by the way.)

I think they should start releasing these "special editions" up front. DVDs themselves, if taken care of, will last for decades upon end. There is no reason anyone should have to by the same title two or three times just to get the commentary the director should have made all along. If nothing else, one should be able to get a partial credit for upgrading their Plain Jane edition to the super-duper version.

To make a long story short (too late) hell yeah I'm gonna buy it. (Which is why Hollywood will continue what it's doing, and not listen to an f-ing thing I just said!)

Titanic was one of the first titles released on DVD, and back then, Paramount DVDs across the board had very little in the way of special features. This was a common complaint; it had to do with licensing issues (Paramount was stupid about that sort of thing at first), and it's long since been corrected.

Point well seen, David. My little rant was meant for Titanic, but also DVD special editions in general...
This releasing of "stripped down" versions up front & "loaded" models down the line has happened often more recently - for which there is no excuse.

Still good points. I'm getting tired of these Pre-Releases (Sin City is prime example) knowing the motherload DVD is on the way.

And my wife just brought me home the DVD (Titanic SE). Sweet!

Count me out. I figured out the ending about a third of the way in.

You're smarter than me. I was totally caught off guard by that surprise ending! Who would have guessed the ship would sink?!
