Special Cases - DVX music video

Ok so here's the second thing I'll post.

A while ago the BBC had a competition. Choose a song that had been in the UK top 40 in the last year and either

a) submit a storyboard idea
or b) a rough version on a VHS.

The winner was told they would get to direct a video for a real band. They didn't tell you who it was. After the competition I found out is was for "Girl's Aloud" (similar to Spice Girls for those who don't know them).

I think my submission was a little inappropriate and I got a polite 'No Thanks'. It was shot in 2 afternoons by myself and the two actors; post in about 3 I think. Avaiable lighting for the most part.

The song I chose was 'Special cases' by the band Massive Attack. All feedback welcome. Hope you enjoy.

Awesome! As far as a "music video", I got so into the story that the music was just background....could be where the polite "no thanks" came from. Anyway I really enjoyed this.

thanks, I wanted to get away completely from the idea of the artist being linked to the music video. My favourite video's are where it takes on a life and meaning of it's own seperate to the artist. I did have the actress say 1 line of the song into the mirror which I felt was appropriate to the idea. The video was meant to complement the mood and was one way of interpreting the lyrics of the song.

Also bear in mind the band are pretty big and no way did I have access to them. There is a great massive attack video called 'teardrop' where a fetus bobs around in a womb singing the song with it's eyes half shut. Very spooky.. It's great. I thought this idea was more in keeping with a band that didnt showcase themselves. And of course you're working with no budget (was shot in my house and my friends).

I understand why this wouldnt even be considered for for a fun pop all girl band for teenagers. If I had known that from the start I would have chosen a different song and style of video too. I had no way of knowing but I had fun making it anyway.

Doing these pieces from time to time is the only thing that keeps me from going mad in the world of corporate video. If anything I wish I could have had more time to work on it.

Nice video Darkline, have you seen the original video for special cases sends a shiver down my spine everytime I watch it. Oh and Teardrop is probably my fave music video ever, a brilliantly executed concept.

Thanks for the all the positive feedback :-)

DVXshooter. I used Premiere pro to edit, and Combustion for all the particle/tracking and keying fx.

Mike, Im glad you noticed the eyeball; when I show it to people most do not see the reflection of the man approaching her reflected in the eye. This had to be tracked to the eyeball and distorted. (harder to see on a small quicktime)

Nicholas, I never saw the original because I didnt want to be influenced by it when I approached the track. However, I just managed to find it after reading your post and it is great! I love the way the images could almost be positive if used with different music and edited differently. It's very subtle and freaky because of that. You never see what's wrong with the genetically engineered kid; but you dont have to, its all implied. Massive attack have done some great music vids.

Oh to have a budget.....lol

nice looking video and a very good job of storytelling. I really liked the fact that the visual effects were story-driven.

disturbing! Nice visuals, makes me afraid to use IM!

I can see why they didn't use it as a music video though - the music supports the visuals more than the other way around - it really feels more like a short movie!
In fact I didn't listen to the music except when the gal says the one line...

nice job though! (where'd you get that mask? creepy!)

I think it's great that people are getting more into the story than anything. But you are right - this is not everyone's idea of what a music video should be. Judging by the winner I think they were looking for something entirely different and light hearted.

The mask is from my aunt's fetish collection. :-)

Wow, based on what people are saying, I must have misread it......From the girl's reaction, I thought it was a concentual kink game. I was really impressed with that too.....complete departure from the norm on the subject.

Hi Mike,

There were two ways of looking at it. One was they were an estalbished couple. I did have on my storyboard a shot of a photograph of the two of them kissing in a frame, which was going to be shown as the last shot next to the bed - but it didnt need this breezeblock piece of exposition, so I ditched it.

Also I thought there was a strong case for these people never having met and deciding to play out this role play on first meet (hence the apprehension). We pick it up form the day they decide to carry it out after several MSN chats.

But yes, it's all a game.
