Sound issues with Canon HF 200

I got my Canon HF 200 which I am really happy with and bought a Rode videomic

But there are some problems.

1. For some reason when I put my ear buds one ear bud starts to backfire with an insane amount of feedback while the other is fine. And I tried with 2 different brands one old and one new.

2. Rode is nice, however I am getting a background static. It is as if I am listening to a vinyl record.

Would I have been better off using the Canon mic?

Too much level out from the Videomic.

In the battery compartment of the RODE Videomic there are 3 set and forget audio input dip switches. For your use set them to the -10db setting and forget 'em.

Wipe the brass output plug with a tiny spot of brass cleaner every few months and make sure it's pushed fully home into your camera, sometimes it takes some effort.

Cheers.
