Sound Devices has announced that they are starting shipment of their newest recorder/monitor. The E5 recorder Sound Deviced E5.jpg http://www.videodevices.com/products/portable-video-recorders/pix-e5
This promises to be a very popular monitor / recorder at $1395 with a variety of recording codecs and an optional external XLR input adapter for audio. We will begin shipping these as soon as our stock arrives which will be in the next few days. This is a great price, great size and product with interesting options that set the Sound Devices/Video Devices apart from other similar products.

I've been waiting...a fan of their products and I like the price point... but have not read / seen anything about any lut support / ability whatsoever in any of the 3 new models. Which is a deal breaker for me.

Just watched one online that goes in depth about the LUTs. Might be best to do your homework before making your decision.

Lut's noted in the video show up for pre determined luts for Slog, Cannon and Arri Log. I have an inquiry with Sound Devices to see if I can get info on user LUT support options...

I've been home working on this for way too long. Are you saying User LUTs or only standard manufacturers luts are promised in firmware down the road?

Does it only record two of the four channels of audio from the FS7 via the HDMI port, or will it record all of the tracks that are being recording internally with the extra two inputs on the hot shoe adapter? The specs suggest otherwise. If it can record all the audio tracks, then this will be a perfect replacement for Atomos Shogun, which doesn't record 4K video, only UHD from the FS7.

Shogun's spec is

HDMI
2 or 8-channel, up to 24-bit (camera dependent)

Ohhhh.... so excited to see user reports about this!!

Although.... I suspect I'll just be settling for the way cheaper BMD Video Assist instead.

Hi Mark,

When using the FS7 HDMI out with PIX-E5, you can record 2 channels of HDMI audio, 2 channels of PIX-LR mic/line balanced XLR, and 2 channels of 3.5mm line audio all at the same time. Does that answer your question?

I'd be wary, the Blackmagic offers virtually no monitoring features whatsoever. The PIX gives you LUTs, false colour, waveform, peaking, pixel zoom, standard SDI inputs, and sound devices build quality.

It's tremendous to get a 1080p display in something so affordable, but the feature set of the PIX really does trumps the Blackmagic by a mile, and not for an awful lot more money either.

Yes, I think so. Only two channels is a deal breaker for me, as FS7 embeds more than two channels in the HDMI stream. I need at least four channels that are pre-synched to picture. Is that true for the PIX-E7 as well?

We are in a world of mutually exclusive choices: the PixE5 which can only capture 2 of 8 channels embedded audio, or the Atomos Shogun, which records all the audio, but can't record DCI 4K input. :( The first company that gives me both gets my business.

According to the manual, the PIX-E5 can record eight channels from the SDI input. Could that work for you?

Only if it can record SDI audio and HDMI 4K video simultaneously. I could live with using two cables, if that would give me 4 channels the the FS7 records with the optional hot shoe XLR inputs. Remember, FS7 is limited to HD on SDI output, so I can't use SDI.
