Other: Sound Devices E5 recorder/monitor starts shipping today

Oh yes, LUTs are pretty important, since the FS7's VF can only display them under rare and unusual setup circumstances without recording them, too.

Thanks Paul for moving this firmware quickly. Just looked at the user guide...there's not much info there...so with this new update... when turning on / using LUT on E5 - that same LUT automatically gets fed to any other external monitor via SDI or HDMI, correct? And all tools (waveform, etc.) will therefore be measuring the LUTted image? Any way to only feed LUT to external monitor? Or use different user LUT to send to external while viewing normal Sony 709 LUT on the E5... similar to the Ody 7Q ?

This is looking better and better every couple weeks.

With Atomos' release last week of 6.5 firmware, and still no 4K capabilities, I'm placing my bets that the PIX E7 will be a part of my arsenal in December when it ships. Three tech support tickets in to Atomos about this problem and still not a peep from them.

I'm sure the superior audio capabilities of the PIX-E7 will be a bonus as well. The price of XQD cards, coupled with the low recording capacities favors use of external recorders with larger capacity drives. And the fact that Adobe Premiere CS6 really shines with Prores UHD content, even four or more simultaneous streams, so it makes sense to simply avoid the whole XAVC playing field entirely.

I only wish Sound Devices were making this product a year ago, as I would not be going through the situation I'm with Atomos now.

Hi Basspig,

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but as I recently bought and have used the XLR K1M (with the MI shoe as a 'dongle', rather than hard-wired into the 'foot' of the unit), I can confirm that in terms of S/N ratio, it's definitely not on par with the internal FS-7 circuitry. I haven't done any calibrated tests, but a simple side-by-side listening comparison comparing the channels with various mics shows a clearly elevated hiss using the XLR-K1M channels (3 &4).

Because of this, I have been using my 2x radio mics straight into the body, and only putting my camera-top 'atmos' mic into the K1M, it's a compromise I'm willing to live with, but it's disappointing to spend fairly significant cash on an audio-specific unit like this, only to have to compromise (yet again!!!).

My guess is that these units have been primarily designed/marketed at A7 users, to whom any sign of XLR with phantom, etc represents a big improvement, and so they've scrimped on the pre-amps. Of course it could be a limitation of the MI interface itself, but that would be even more peturbing!

Cheers,

jason

I did not see this response earlier I just read it now. Thank you for this report but I do have one question... Do you have the GPS feature turned on or off in your FS 7?

LUT gets applied to LCD and SDI/HDMI out. Scopes measure the LUT'd image. We are investigating the possibility of an option to disable/enable LUTs on outputs.

How is the PixE5 working for you guys with the Fs7 ? Any problems ? It can record 4k 10bit at 25p Right from HDMI right ? I am interested in it for FS7 and A7RII + Ronin-M.

Paul - I am trying to find confirmation in the manual or elsewhere... the PixE5 does do cross-conversion for sdi / hdmi, correct? In other words, if I feed an 1920x1080 23.98 signal via hdmi from my FS7 to the E5, I can then run hd-sdi cable out to external monitor and any LUT on the E5 will be shown on the external monitor?
And then - just double checking - what about same scenario - except sending a 3840x 2160 signal via hdmi, it also does down-conversion to the sdi out signal?

Yes, the PIX-E5 will cross-convert 1080p23.98 from HDMI to SDI and visa verca and LUT will appear on SDI out.
And 3840x2160 on the HDMI in will cross convert to 1080p on the SDI out.

Paul
