Sound-blankets

i bought 2 of the producer's choice blankets. we used them in our drama-fest entry. you can see them here in our thread. they're visible in the second and second to last behind the scenes pictures. i think they worked well. we were in a big square room with wood floors and it seemed like they helped cut down on the reverb. we used two of these photography background stands to hang them.

we intially bought lengths of fleece, but they were entirely too thin to do anything. they did work well to dampen the crew's footprints and keep the equipment off of the nice hardwood floor though. you can also see them in the pics on the floor.

Hi folks,

You might try your local awning vendor to put grommets in where ever you want them... Also, as a newbie, how do folks hang sound blankets on a set... stands, cord, wire ??? In my studio I have Gobos made from 2x4s but then they are static... obviously not a location item!

So Vidled...and the others who ordered these blankets....

Any thoughts?
I just read through these 9 pages and would like to hear any followup thoughts you might have on these blankets. I was debating ordering a dozen after reading about them - but figured I'd see what you guys had to say now that you've had them for a while.

Thanks.

Ditto. I would like to hear any updates as well. I just read these nine pages and feel like I'm left hanging on the conclusion :)

Thanks,
Jason

They are GREAT blankets. Thick & heavy, and not flimsy like the HF ones. It's like night and day to compare those two.

Unfortunately I haven't much experience of using them for their intended purpose -as sound blankets-, but constantly use them as blankets (moving, covering, for the car, etc.)

Okay, so final update - I have my blankets, and have used them many times. Honestly I ordered too many (I've never used more than 3, the other 3 are still in the box they came in). Shipping on these is very high because of the weight, but they work very well.

As far as hanging them goes, they've gone up in numerous ways - clamped over windows, doors, etc., hung with c-stands, gaffer taped to walls and in my recording studio, hung over hooks I put in (I had the gromets added to my blankets).

So, I recommend them, but I would call first to make sure they're in stock if you need them quickly.

OK, this is resurrecting a very dead thread! Are these blankets still the best option? We have been using moving blankets from Big Orange (HD). They are OK, and do help cut sound bouncing off a hardwood floor under a piano.

I have some of the Harbor Freight blankets as well, and it seems more recently, the cheapo ones have in fact deteriorated in quality.

Although a bit more expensive, I purchased a box of 1" thick acoustic foam panels (2x4') and glued them to foam core. Many of the panels have been hung in my office, but there were enough left over to make a road kit. I had a hard bicycle travel case that is just the right size for 24x42, so I cut some down and stack them in the hard case. This works really well. The panels are a little stiff so can be stood up without support and can be Velcro attached to most anything. I think they are acoustically superior to blankets and look more professional. Although more than blankets, I think I paid about $250 for the box of foam and another $100 for glue and foamcore. It did produce about a dozen panels.

Where did you get the acoustic foam panels? And you glued them to foam core? The foam cores are readily available at the home center. So basically 2X4.

After looking on the BH site, I didn't see exactly what I purchased, but this is close.

Two things regarding glue....buy enough, the first time I used the recommended spray glue very sparingly which was a mistake....use plenty. I also used some silicon adhesive, essentially pure silicon bathroom calk from either DAP or Dow Corning, and that works well also. Either way, use plenty.

I have a few of the large Producer's Blankets from VocalBoothToGo. They are more expensive than the ones I see mentioned by several orders of magnitude. They are 96"x80", black on both sides, industrial grommets on one side for hanging. They are acoustically good in terms of deadening sound and you can use them as a backdrop if you want to go black and use shallow depth of field. I didn't want to mess around so was willing to pay a premium. If storage is an issue, think it through as they are bulky. Shipping was not inexpensive either.

Markertek.com has a full line of sound control products. Their 2x54x54" Markerfoam sound absorption panels are lower cost than the Auralex products.

No you all loose because we went to U-Haul to buy some blankets and the guy said we don't sell them, ... meet me out back.
