Sony's new HXR-NX70 dust proof small form camera

OMG, it doesn't do DOF! It's not DSLR! Why would anyone buy it? But seriously, this might give panasonic a run for their money on the hmc150. Sony is late to the game, bUt has built something this 150 owner likes at first glance. Will wait for further reviews.

8string, isn't Sony always behind Panasonic? (hvx - ex1) Sony's NX line was behind AVCam, but at least Sony isn't as slow as Canon.

I'd say while this is the same price as the HMC150, it seems like more of a competitor to the HMC40 form factor.

Though I still think the whole weather proof prosumer camera really sets it self apart from everything else that is out there.

We all like to debate codec, color space, frame size etc. etc. etc. What about taking your camera to Burning Man & having it work after a week of getting pounded with dust? Or taking a camera to the rain forest?

The debate is over when the camera with better DOF, codec & color space has been fried by water / dust & isn't turning on any more; while some camera using AVCHD 4:2:0 1/3" CMOS is operating without a glitch & can take a lot more of environmental pounding.

Smaller the diameter- less light going through= not so great when the light is low.

There is very little correlation with the filter diameter and the amount of light going through.

A better measurement would be maximum aperture, which is F1.8. Keep in mind, this is a camera with a small sensor, and a 6.9x crop factor. Which gives a better idea of how much light is hitting the sensor than the filter diameter.

if the cx700 images are anything to go by then this camera will suffer from:

1) Soft video - never really pin sharp
2) Low dynamic range (lattitude) blown highlights

I think the guts of this camera will be the same as the cx700 since the specs for lens focal lengths etc are the same as is the sensor size.

So once again - its not really a pro camera at all merely a consumer cam with better external controls (well i say better -gain and wb are all in the menus!)

I think the canon XF100 is safe if this all comes to pass...

Do you actually have a CX700? Or any of the small Sony cameras like the XR500, CX550 etc ? I do. They produce very sharp video if focused correctly just like any other camera. As to dynamic range one has to look at the video not a spec since all these modern CMOS camera manipulate the image coming from the sensor to bring up shadow detail and suppress over exposure. They are consumer cameras intended for auto operation switching to full manual control limits their capabilities considerably. Semi auto is the way to go so that the auto operation can get the most from the camera. Exactly the opposite of using a pro camera. Most Pro cameras ( like my NX5U ) are poor in full auto. My XR500 or CX700 easily produces better video in full auto. I am sure the intended market for the NX70 is run and gun news type where it will be in auto most of the time and do a good job. I just feel its a little expensive.

How can you see this camera is going to wipe away any other camera's? Nowhere on the web any sample footage of this cam can be found. Maybe it looks like crap, then who cares about the watertight housing amd all the other fantastic specs?
