Sony's new HXR-NX70 dust proof small form camera

how to kill canon's XF100 in one fell swoop??

This competes with the Canon XA10, also offering 4:2:0 AVCHD encoding and internal memory (64 vs 96 Gb), for less money. However, the Sony does have 60p and the XA10 does not.

The XF100 has 4:2:2 MPEG2 encoding, and to some that is huge. If it is not important to you then go with 4:2:0 AVCHD with either the lower priced XA10 or this camera from Sony.

I do like the Sony's ability to copy directly to an external HDD without a PC in the chain. Great for field work.

Yes, that's a good thing. However, apparently you do need to plug the camera into mains power to do the transfer to an external HDD.

Where was this camera when I was a TV news photog? I sure could have used it when I was out chasing hurricanes.

It has over 6 million pixels on a 1/2.88 chip? Amazing. And 1080/60P as well.

You only need 2M for 1080, so extra pixels for still pics involves sampling for video, potential moire and aliasing, and smaller pixel size so reduced low light versus sensors at native resolution. Most reports say that the backlit Sony sensor is not a low light king. We will have to see how this iteration does. However, weather sealing is very nice.

The weather proofing is really a nice feature, will be interesting to see if anything else comes out pre-NAB that is more exciting.

How different is this camcorder from HDR-CX700V. (I know XLR inputs, dust & rain proof, Bigger LCD, lens hood) anything else? Also I would like to know the prize difference between these two.

reputed $3200 list versus $1300 street. As for the image quality, it is not clear if it is the same, or much better. The sensor appears to have the same specs, but in today's world how you encode the sensor information can be more important than the sensor, so we will not know until the camera is tested. There are many flavors of AVCHD, is this the same as the CX700 or different?

If its IPX5 rated, that's a known quantity how the camera will perform against the environment as its an international IEC standard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code

So the camera must still function normally after being exposed to dust particles with a diameter of 0.1 µm to 25µm for 8 hours. It also implies, the camera can normally function after being placed on a turntable and sprayed with water from a nozzle with a diameter of 6.3 mm at a rate of 12.5 liters per minute from a distance of 3m for at least 3 minutes.

Wow!

Now, hold your horses. I know it looks like a nice little camera, but.... First of all let's see the picture quality. Second is the codec, which is not a broadcast codec as of yet. I also don't know about several features which made me pre-pay for XF100, IR recording under-over cranking, interval recording and LCPM sound.

An earlier version of the NX70 sensor, in the CX550 (not the CX700) was reported to require 8x more light than the XF100 sensor in its consumer body, the HF-G10. Of course, we all hope that the NX70/CX700 sensor is substantially improved.

ok just heard - this thing does have manual video gain, unlike the cx700v which is all auto

but...

its controlled via the menu and how easy it is to set etc remains to be seen , but at least its there in some form. hopefully not aka tied to the iris like the panasnoic tm700/tm900 etc whcih shove gain on to the end if the iris function

This thing has so many things missing that the XF100 has ....I don't think the Canon is shaking in it's boots! The XF100 has:
1. 720P modes
2. Overcranking/undercranking
3. A sensor designed for video...not the consumer cam "lets take 12.3 megapixel stills too! Yippeee"
4. A HUGE assortment of picture adjustments...gammas, etc. the same as the XHA1s and XF300
5. A superior 4:2:2 codec

I do love the Sony's design and I think it will be a nice camera....but it's a CX700 in different clothing. The Canon XF100 is an XF300 in different clothing.

could someone put up a link on this, either a video of "how to" or just text of explaining it more... i mean, does the camera have a USB port that you can hook an external hard drive to or what?

The camera has a special cable (VMC-UAM1) that will hook up to a USB enabled hard drive (a standard cable won't work) The Western Digital Passport Essentials 750 GB for example is supposedly compatible. The hard drive has to be FAT32 and the camera must be plugged in to an outlet. Sorry If I got anything wrong....just reading posts from DVInfo. It sounds like a fairly easy process.....just use the Sony cable, plug it in to the FAT32 Hard Drive via the HDs USB port and off you go.
