getting spanned footage shooting with 1 p2 card?

I have one 16 GB p2 card and I completely filled it on a shoot recently. I shot multiple 20-30 sec B-roll shots, and conducted a 24 min interview, however the interview was shot in the middle of the card, it wasn't the last thing shot so I know It didn't roll to the very end of the card during the 24min take... so when I go to log and transfer everything loads perfect except the 24min take?? it says spanned and then gives me an error?? I thought you could only get spanned footage when shooting between two cards, right?

does anyone know a way to make this work, I've tried multiple times and ways and have yet to figure anything out

I'm using FCP 6 - log and transfer via firewire - shooting 720PN

Thanks a lot!
Andrew

The P2 cards use the FAT32 file format, which is inherently limited to 4GB file sizes. So if you create a clip that's larger than 4GB (and yes, a 24min clip would be about 10GB), it will have to span those 4GB files together. This is normal.

ok, that makes sense the way you explained that, but im still unclear as to how to get the spanned footage logged? is there a trick?

Thanks Again

I'm sure there is, but I don't use FCP and even if I did I'd refuse to use the Log & Transfer, I'd instead use MXF4QT or Raylight. I'm sure some FCP Log & Transfer user will come along and provide the answer you seek.

I only did this once, but IIRC, I just used Log & Transfer for all the clips. The spanned clips showed up as individual "incomplete" clips in the browser, then they could all be put in the Timeline in sequence. I didn't do anything special.

So are you trying to L&T directly from the camera? I had dumped my files to a folder first, then did the import from that folder. You must have the LASTCLIP.TXT file present also or the spanning info is lost.

with p2cms you don't get the lastclip.txt and i am having this same spanned issue with fcp 6... if anyone figures this out, man let us know!

Hi,

I'm using FCP Studio 2 and import using Log and Transfer. I have never had a problem (not yet anyway) and FCP recognises the spanned clips and stitches them back together to make one clip.

Weenie.

can raylight fix this? and then still be used in fcp6

Hi Raylight is fantastic, but Log & Transfer has worked just fine for me in longform clips. As long as you transferred the card properly, write-protecting the card before you transfer the footage off of it, you should have no problems.

i just broke them up into smaller chucks to log and transfer, if not it will look like it is loading but then it just disappears. you might think it is there but it will not be. had me in a panic almost formatted my p2 card with the spanned clip. be aware ,i wasn,t.

I have a folder with a few clips and understand what "spanned" means.

The odd thing is, I offloaded the clips at the beginning of a shoot > shot a little more > offloaded the same clips + the few new clips- to a new folder and only the 1st offload had a few clips that say spanned, while the second offload, same clips do not say spanned...why???
