Just to let you know guys that the $169, original Sony XQD 128 GB cards are again in stock in B&H. I bought my share :)

Still haven't got any shipment confirmation yet, so maybe I was late to it, too...

Order Status is " In stock, order sent to warehouse" since last night.

Noob question... Is there any difference between these and other cards as long as the read/write speeds are good? (say Lexar or others)

Another noob question (without even looking in the manual) My fs7 has a 64 gig card that works fine but for longer projects in 4K not enough space, If I put a second 64 gig card in the other slot does the recording skip from one card to the second card uninterrupted? Any special method for joining the 2 video files? (or does it just stop on one card and the next frame of video goes to the other card?)

The Sony cards look slightly more robust, apart from that, not much difference other than compatibility.

In theory, it will seamlessly carry on recording, though it's not something I like to trust.

Hey JoeJitzu, I see that you TOO, are PB certified! Awesome!

EDIT: although I see that yours is much bigger? (you must have gotten a "double" thumbs up!)

In my experience the card-swapping-whilst-rolling works 100% of the time, never had an error or a skipped frame. I think it's happened to me about 5-10 times that I'm covering something obs doc and the "will swap card soon" warnings popped up, and then "swapping cards" with no issue. Those were probably all at 1080 though, so perhaps at 4K it might be more of a risk.

Just my ten cents...

Havent had issues with card swapping either. But if its a shoot where you cant risk it, dont. Swapping cards manually takes just seconds :-)

I've had Sony cameras carry over a clip from one card to the other for seven years starting with the EX-1. Never once had a issue. I do however depending on what Im filming, stop rolling and manually switch cards when the warning comes up. This is more of a habit to give media manager/post one less chance of screwing up. Yes, the special way to join the files is to use Catalyst Browser when downloading the cards, put both cards contents in the same destination folder and the software will seamlessly join the two files into one.

That it will seamlessly continue on the other card (provided it has some space on it :)), of that I'm sure. But I never tried to also seamlessly copy such a spanned clip to the PC from the 2 cards using Catalyst Browse (the way I did with SxS cards using Sony Content Browser); does it work in that it concatenates the 2 parts back into a simple take clip? If so, how do I do it?

Yes, does it exactly the same way Content Browser does/used to with SxS or XQD. I can't go through a tutorial step by step but it's as simple as selecting the clips, creating a destination folder on your drive/computer and hitting the Copy button. Then do the same with the 2nd cards contents, selecting the same destination folder. Doesn't matter which card you do first.

Put both clips in the same folder, select both clips, click on the tools menu, select Combine relay clips. It will ask you what you want to name the single, resultant clip, then it does it.
The clips can't be just any two clips you want to join, has to be the relay clips, with the time code continuing unbroken from clip one to clip two.

Thanks Mark - this is a piece of info I was missing. With Content Browser, combining split clips took place automatically when both chunks were copied to the same directory structure on disk, so using "Combine relay clips" in Browse is an important difference.

Piotr

It does it automatically in Catalyst Browser as well. Not saying Mark's process doesn't work but I've never needed to select them and click "Combine..". Again, we're talking about a shot that rolled over from A-card to B-card while recording without interruption. There should be no need to name it as it's name is what ever was assigned to it in sequence at the beginning of the clip that was started on A-card.

LOL, I actually got certified from Philip Bloom a few years ago, it's a funny story on how I got it and how he certified me. haha
