Sony XDCAM EX3 with 35mm adapter image flip capability

there is truth in your words, but do you see any other solution? any other camera in the range of 15-20k $ ?

It seems to me that a B4 relay with Letus on an EX-3 would still only give you 1/2" of a 2/3" image. This would be useful I guess but would not give you the full image. Toi get the full image you would still need to use a standard Letus in front of the EX zoom lens.

Am I missing anything here.

the ex3 relay will be designed for the ex3, it won't be the b4 relay that is coming out

Thanks philip,

That sounds better and will probably look great.
Like others on this thread I'm not sure I can justify that expense for this quality camera.

There is no "one size fits" all perfect camera setup. It all depends on your shooting style and needs. If you tell us more about that, maybe we can all offer some opinions and suggestions.

I don't get the advantage of buying an EX3 if you're not going to use the interchangeble lens feature and (as someone points out, the TC), I don't see any advantage especially there is no improvement in the resolution (35mbs native or CCD). I have not read much, but I think the resolution on the LCD screen is also the same as the EX1.

I'm still a bit confused. If I'm not going to buy any Sony lens or other third party lens that will work with the camera interchangeble lens feature, then why buy a camera that has an interchangeble lens capability especially with the added cost. What type of lens and how much will it cost to just buy lenses that will work with the camera without a relay or an adapter?

all just to have a camera with an adapter but with no light loss through addition lens and more sharpness, as sony or any other brand video lenses costs 6000$ and up..

The sweetspot would be the EX1 + the new $4500 letus ultimate. That should cost u around us$10k.

To me, if you want to spend close to $20k, you be better off buying the Red One instead. 4k resolution + no adapter needed for that 35mm dof.

or Get the Hpx500 (no cmos rolling shutter) + upcoming b4 relay (~$2500) + $1300 35mm adapter. That whole package will cost you US $11,800 and you will have TC in/out and Gen Lock in a pro camera body (shoulder mount ready).

I dont know if this is off topic. but does the EX1 have an internal flip feature for use with an adapter? The EX3's mirror feature seem like the DVX's that only flip horizontally. I'm not sure tho. but i think thats what mirror means.

As i recalled, No, the Ex1 doesnt have flip feature that would record the image right side up. If you decided to go with non flip 35mm adapter, with the long GOP codec, correcting the footage orientation in post is going to take long rendering time and cpu power. If this is your workflow, you just lost the advantage of "faster than real time solid state media".

I speculate* that even on the EX3, the flip feature will only correct the image on the EVF and the LCD. It will not record the image right side up.

I feel so dumb writing this but how do you post a new topid? I can only figure out how to reply on this forum but have no idea how to start my own topic. lol help would be great.

So either EX1 letus ultimate or HPX letus extreme B4?

Letus wants $4500 for their B4 relay and $4500 for the ultimate. So ask yourself if $9000 is worth it, so just you can use 35mm lens on the hpx500.

$8000 + $9000 = $17,000 and add $ 7000 if you want a 2/3 HD lens , for about $22k you can get a red one complete ready to shoot package.

or get the Ex3 at $8400 + $4500 letus ultimate
= $12,900 for a complete system with 35mm adapter and the stock fujinon 1/2" lens.

to me i rather get the Ex3 $8400 and the Sg pro Rev3 or the Sgpro Blade and get a complete workable system (1/2 eng lens and 35mm adapter) at below $10k

Not really comparing apple to apple here. $22k for a RED ONE is the bare minimum, with the cheapest glass you can get and virtually none of the accessories. Kholi already went over the math in another thread if I remembered. This is compared with an HPX package with top of the line glass and all the toys.

The $7000 - $8000 p2 hd line of glass from canon or fujinon are not even middle of the line HD glass. OTOH, 70% or more of the Bourne ultimatum was shot with nikon 28-70 and 80-200 lenses which you can use as stock lens on the red one.

I calculated from red's website and around $22k, it includes all the basic necessity to start shooting with the red one, albeit having just 1x or 2x of 8 gig cf card and you have to supply your own nikon lenses ($250 for new f1.4 50mm ...etc).

Some people are handicapped with having luxuries before they can shoot. Back in the hvx200 days, a lot of indie shooter without money managed to survived with just the free 8 gig card that was included with the cam. Yes, it is a LOT of hassle, but it didnt not rendered you handicapped and disabled with just 1x p2 card.

OTOH, $17k on this hpx package does not even include battery/charger and any p2 card. I would also speculate by next NAB they will upgrade the hpx500 sensor and feature to make the cam comparable to the new hpx 170.

The Ex3 is giving a person a lot of cam for their money. A similar spec-ed 1/2" camera from sony goes for 25k but it is CCD based. Sony as a company is a very aggresive in its strategy, The XDCAM EX series surely has shacked and impacted the industry. Panasonic OTOH is very conservative and slow. They are still scare of even providing 50/60hz support to the hpx170. Not to mention using the same CCD on the hvx 200 on the hpx500.

You're right, but people just don't like to listen at all. Nothing wrong with that, it's probably better for others to just try it and realize that what others were saying was right and they should've listened.

The two packages do not compare in any way and are two completely different animals.

Furthermore, if you weren't planning to use the EX3 with a Relay then there's no real point in getting an EX3 to begin with. The lenses will have the same quality, the advantage of the EX3 is the removable lens and a rig that will be shorter when using a 35mm Adapter.

The advantage of the Relay with the HPX500 is strictly to avoid having to spend thousands on one lens and instead having the option to use all sorts of lenses that are just as if not more effective in areas of Sharpness, Contrast, Color Rendition and in addition many different choices in focal lengths, zooms, and qualities.

If you aren't going to use a Relay than an EX1 is probably the way to go when choosing between EX1 and 3.

If it were an HPX500 there wouldn't be any question for me personally: a relay is a must to get the most millage out of a camera that already costs 8k without a lens.

Forgive my lack of blogspeak but what's OTOH?
