Sony XA10 vs Panasonic GH2

Was curious if anyone had opinions for getting one or the other. How do they matchup vid quality-wise, which is better in low light, xa10 is probably better on the fly, no?

Even: Is there any reason beside xlr inputs to get the XA10 over the g10 (in B&H despite them both supposedly having the same sensor the xa10 looked way better, but it was in a store).

Thanks to any who respond!

elmer - It really depends on what you need it for. The XA10, like most camcorders, will have superior image stabilization, faster autofocus and superior audio (to include XLR inputs, full manual audio level control and a built-in headphone jack). So, you're right - it's better for fast setups "on the fly".

That said, I personally like the GH2's image quality better. I also like the flexibility of interchangeable lenses and the shallow depth of field made possible by the larger sensor. And, even with a $150 Tascam DR-40 for XLR inputs and pro audio quality, an $850 GH2is less expensive than a $2000 XA10.

As for low light with the GH2, you'll just have to get yourself some fast lenses :-): http://vimeo.com/40756500

Good luck with your decision,

Thanks, Bill, appreciate you taking the time to post the words and the pictures!
ps Oops, didn't mean to insult the GH2 folks by calling it a Sony. ;)

Hey Bill, I see you have the TM900. If you don't mind, how do you like that and how does that stack up vs XA10 and HF-G10, with their identical sensors?

elmer - based on what I have seen, the XA10/G10 both produce better images than the Panasonic in low-light. In daylight, to my eyes, the Canons produce about the same image quality as the TM900.

Sadly, though, the Canons don't shoot 1080/60p - but that's only a big deal if you prefer high frame rates at normal speed - or need smooth slow motion with minimal effort in post.

All of that said, when I was ready to buy a camcorder a couple of months ago, Panasonic was clearing the shelves for their new model, the X900M, so the TM900 was marked down to $600 - I had to pick one up. :-)

Cheers,

Bill
