Hi. For sports events, car events and weddings (and perhaps other corporate stuff if I can manage to get in), which camera would you recommand ? GH4/GH5 or Sony (a6500) ?

I'm asking because I'm due to replace my camera (lumix GH2) and I want something reliable/all arounder.

Thanks to answer

I think the A6500 1080p modes may be of degraded quality and the GH5 seems to have reports of bad AF. Personally I wouldn't recommend the GH4. It really does depend what features you need. Obviously they are different sensor sizes and lens options etc which may be a consideration.

There is a big difference in full sensor read-out speed between the A6500 and the GH5, with the A6500 being more than 2 times SLOWER than the GH5, so for sports or fast action shooting the GH5 might be a better choice. ( the Panasonic 5-axis stabilization is also noticeably better )

If you need 4k, overheating probably kills the a6500 for weddings, and RS kills it for sports. It would be my camera of choice for lots of things because I love the DR (which kills GH4 and GH5 for me), but for this kind of use, I don't think it's a good idea.

If you don't really need 4K, the Canon 77D or 80D may suit your needs better than the cameras you mentioned.

I would have to say, for that list, probably neither. I'm assuming you are in somewhere around the $2000.00usd to $3000.00usd mark, you need versatility and you need it to run for hours at a time. That pushes you toward a "traditional" camera and the closest thing would be a JVC LS-300. FS5 and FS7 would also be a good choice. Maybe Black Magic but I keep hearing contradictory things about them.

Due to overheating i wouldn't be able to choose the A6500. It would be bad to have it shut down during a live event that couldn't be repeated.

Not only does he not measure them, but he doesn't even show a side-by-side comparison. Given actual measurements put the GH4 around two or three stops behind the Sonys, and given people said GH4 vs GH5 would be a tie in terms of DR, I'd really have to see proof of that before believing it.

With the a9 skipping slog3, I would love it if the GH5 could at least match the a6500 in terms of DR. That requires a massive improvement over the GH4, though.

GH5 vs A6500

The A6500 standard image profile looks better than the GH5 equivalent, but the difference shrinks dramatically when both cameras are shooting LOG.

I've also seen MUCH better GH5 camera-only stabilization footage than you see in this demo. ( the GH5 still has a kind stabilization bug where it shifts left to right and back again when walking )
