Sony Vegas Pro 10

ive never used vegas but looking for a new nle...
i was wondering if when using vegas on a laptop with one external screen (the external being the project/timeline and the laptop screen being the preview screen) does the preview screen have to match the specs of the working resolution?
say im working with 1080p and want to master to that as well.... does the preview screen have to be 1080p capable? or does it not matter what res the preview screen is?

Well, depends. If you want to watch fullscreen 1080 previews, then it has to be. If you're not worried about pixel-for-pixel, then it doesn't.

The ONLY issue I'm having with Sony Vegas 10 Pro 64 Bit is when I try to edit 2 cameras in multicam mode while live previewing OUT to a secondary monitor. It will consitatnly and randomly STOP RESPONDING for 2 to 3 minutes and then continue. I'm doing a Multicam edit using 2 .AVI video clips about 60 minutes long each. Both have audio tracks. Both captured using Sony VidCap. They are standard AVI files.
When I click PREVIEW on secondary monitor and start doing takes, it will FREEZE during preview. The timeline marker keeps going, the audio wave forms keep moving, but the video LOCKS. If I wait for 3 minutes it will unlock and I can keep editing until it does it again.

I have been using Sony Vegas sense Version 5 and NEVER had problems. I edit short form and long form, as well as 14 to 18 layers deep with no issues. It renders fast and consistent.
Aside from having an issue with newer Quicktime codecs and this secondary preview issue it's been great.

For for the sake of help and or conversation my system specs are below.

Custom Built PC Tower.

Windows 7 Professional, 64 Bit (all latest updates)
Sony Vegas Pro 10 64 bit
1TB system drive
1TB G-raid drive for video on Firewire 800.
additional 2TB of drives for other media and temp files.
8GB or Rip Jaw Ram
8800GTS 640mb NVidia Video card with latest drivers.
Two (21") Samsung Monitors

All updates, patches and drivers have been updated.
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit is a full clean install.
Sony Vegas Pro 10 is a full clean install

I have seen this bug myself, and it's not limited to multicam editing. I have reported it.

You can also clear the problem by closing the project and reopening it. But it's something they need to fix.

I think Vegas is way better than Premiere, Performance and options are amazing, Playback is ok but if you want any better get the Cineform codec Neo
it makes a pleasure editing

I have been using Vegas 10 for a couple hours now and I am loving it. It's a dream to work with compared to 9. Using a lot of DSLR clips, and the playback and performance is very smooth. Love it. Makes a difference in my work style.

edit: okay I've run into some of those multi cam freeze up things. Ow.

Ultra versions 1.2.3 and later work with Vegas 10, get free updates at dvfilm.com/update

If you upgrade to Vegas 10 make sure you reinstall Ultra

Contact DVFilm Support if you have any questions

This is like an old commercial for chewing gum, "IT's two, two, two programs in one!" You both are right! Vegas can be stable, but for some people isn't. Vegas is not Premiere, despite the post, let's just say that preview doesn't quite keep up with the lips. I for one, have stated that Sony ought to invest in a Mercury like engine. But for many of us, it does do simple jobs great! I have just spent two weeks doing multicamera editing throwing raw AVCHD, H.264, MXF, and MOV on the same timeline (don't ask I won't tell), adding Protitler stuff, and it never gave me a problem. This is on 10.d on 64 Bit W7 with 8 GBs RAM. So it CAN be stable, but have no idea why, at other times, I, like many of you, have crashes galore. Sheesh.

So please, I think that it's not quite accurate to state that Vegas is somewhere out ahead of Premiere, or even today's FCP. I would never say that. There are so many more third party plug ins avaiable for both Premiere and FCP that Vegas is a distant third. Obviously, we have to start moving away from FCP (I run both FCP and Vegas at my desk), but the current version will work just fine for the next year or so, as long as you don't upgrade your OS.

So I'm thrilled that someone thinks that Vegas is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but Perrone makes some great points. It's not sliced bread. It's more like chopped liver. Good but not great.

Adobe is not so bad at the video editing, They have the best program for effects, After effects, but Premiere in my opinion is a program with a friendly and pretty interface ( not better than Vegas interface ), That want to dictate its rules, Vegas is more efficient, I mean works better with same resources, Try Vegas with a high end graphic card and lots of ram as the mercury Engine requires, and tell us which one is more efficient, Also Vegas has lots of Plugins, just to mention a few, Red giant looks, Production assistant, New blue FX , Neat video, Plural eyes and many more, and if that doesn't fill your expectations There you have Aftereffects.
Vegas is very flexible and accurate

Anyone able to identify a feature in Vegas that allows precise replacement of a video+on-camera sound recording wtih a Video+externally recorded sound?

I understand there are 3rd party software solutions and would like to know what the options are here, then secondly, whether there any audio synch facilities within Sony Vegas Pro 10/11.

The only way is do it the hard way and that's by ear. I've done it before (pan the on-camera sound to one side, external audio to the other and slip one track until they're synced up) and it's really not that hard as long as you don't have a lot of clips to sync up.

The best one out there for Vegas is PluralEyes and a 30-day free trial is available.
If you like it, it's $150 USD to buy it.

Not by ear. By waveform. You can see down to the sample level exactly where they match.

It's actually not very hard, though it's hardly automatic.
