Sony SxS Prices Tumble

Wow...I haven't been checking prices lately on cards but they sure have come down!

I think the 32GB card used to be like $1,500.00 . I don't know if it's the ExpressCard adaptor revolution or the economy or Panasonic's recent E series cards but man are they competitively pricing these things now!

From B&H Photo:

8 GB - $429.95
16 GB - Discontinued (boo)
32 GB - $869.95

So pretty much they WANT people to get the 32GB cards. It makes no economical sense to buy the 8GB cards now because for $10.00 more for the cost of two of them you can get double the space on a 32GB sized card.

But I will happily use my two new 16GB Hoodman cards that I got for $300.00 (including shipping). I'll have a video review up on here shortly. So far so good for the most part!

I wish they would tumble to the prices of an SD card, would love to have 32gigs worth of over-cranking space!

Yea, don't you wish they would just be happy with making money from making and selling great cameras...

The thing is I guess we are the minority. The majority of the users out there are probably buying SxS.

Here in Argentina for example I only know of one other guy that uses MxM.

Adam,
Are you saying we should not use the Transcend card in the EX camera ?
(in your video review). Do you know we are using the same adapter ?

It's true, many Sony EX1/EX3 users I talked to did not know about alternative SDHC cards.

Out of all the EX cameras we've sold (we might hit our 500th EX camera sale this year - maybe we'll give that one away to one lucky customer for free  ) , there were only 2 cases where our customers SxS cards went bad on them while shooting. They contacted Sony support directly and sent the cards to Sandisk. They were able to retrieve some if not all the data for them.

I don't know if transcend or MxM will retrieve the data for you if your sdhc card stops working. But we've sold many Hoodman MxMs and transcend cards and yet to hear a problem.

No, what I am saying is that if the Hoodman's don't work for some reason you can return them without Hoodman questioning it. If you get an adaptor card from another manufacturer that's main purpose is for hooking up to a laptop then you *could* run into trouble returning it.

And by all means if Transcends or whatever you may be using work...use it. As I don't have any experience with other brands I can't say how good or bad the Hoodmans are vs. the cheaper solutions. The cheaper solutions may even be better/more stable. But they are not guaranteed to work with the EX cameras like Hoodman cards are.

My biggest disappointment with the Hoodman cards was the Unknown media errors and the 48fps overcranking not working properly. Other than that I have peace of mind knowing that if any other issues crop up I can return the card and get all my money back (within 30 days) or the proper replacements sent.

I think Sony is following the printer model--make the camera cheap, but gouge them on the SxS media. Printers are dirt cheap, but the inks... you get the picture. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

yep, but I think they didn't expect that generic ink to kick in and work quite so well ;-)

I've had mixed results with generic ink. Some printers won't work at all with generic or refilled cartridges. That's why I would be leery of Sony 'upgrading' the firmware to remove compatibility with non-Sony media. They could always claim it's due to liability for lost data. ;)
