Sony RX10 with 24-200mm constant f2.8 zoom and 1" sensor !

The (little brother) RX100M2 has a filter adapter available from Sony. I can't imagine they would ignore filters on the RX10.

My guess is it's a built in 62mm front thread (not requiring any adapter). If that's not the case, there will be a filter adapter, like the RX100M2.

I can see what looks like a front thread in this video. Expand to 720p to see it more clearly:

How did they measure that 1 inch sensor ? I thought 1 inch is 25.4 mm..
That sensor is really like 16mm in the diagonal. Far from an inch.
And what exactly is a 1 inch "type" sensor ? either it is or it isn't.

No sensor is the stated size. Never has been, never will be; a 1/3" sensor doesn't measure a third of an inch in any way; a 1/2" sensor doesn't measure 1/2" on any dimension, not even close; a 2/3" sensor is 9.6mm x 5.4mm, no where near the 17mm that 2/3" would be.

So a 1" type sensor is the same thing as every other sensor is listed -- none of them are actual dimensions, but instead they're the size that the imaging area of an old tube-type camera would deliver. So this new Sony has a sensor that's about as big as the imaging area of an old 1" tube-type camera would have had.

There's nothing underhanded going on, this is just standard common camera nomenclature.

So it's mixing old tech standards of measurements with the digital age. ? hmm...
Perhaps they should also give the physical camera dimensions in fractions of cubits instead.
Anyway I think it is going to be an excellent camera on all counts.
Won't be long, I imagine, till a 4K version of it will show up.
Nice going Sony.

If there really is a Santa, and he's really magic....then all I want for Christmas is the Blackmagic sensor (and associated formats) inside THIS camera, with all of it's features and form factor. :)

Looks like a great camera, but I'm curious how you manually focus. One of the videos said it has a manual aperture ring (which is awesome) but then the other ring is for zoom. I assume that larger ring is electronic and can be switched back and forth from a zoom ring to a focus ring. Can anyone confirm this?

Would be a nice camera to see hacked for higher bitrates or raw if possible.

I played with this camera today and it is really usable. The OLED viewfinder is awesome and ISO 12,800 video looks about as noisy as 1600 on my A77. The thumb wheel on the rear seems to be set a little too far into the camera and the zoom was a little slow but that is just me looking for some negatives. It comes with a nice looking petal type lens hood too.

I hate AVCHD but am still excited about trying this baby. Not sure if it'll hold to do pro work but as a private camera why not. Much more convenient than m4/3 anyways with that 24-200/2.8 lens.

Yes, you are right, the ring has different modes, and all are by-wire. It will be pretty nice if manual focus is useable for pulling.

Still some aliasing visible in the sample videos though, doesn't really look like 5K properly downscaled.

Besides the codec, the specs on this Sony kinda remind me of the fixed lens Scarlet Red pulled the pin on. Can't wait to see the real worlds of this cam, with that sweet focal range, clickless 2.8, stabilization, 1080/50 and weather sealing this could be the video camera I have been looking for. May even bail the C100 for two of these.........if (a big if) the footage speaks. Does anyone know if the zoom speed can be adjusted if using the rocker? Cheers..Phil

I have a suspicion that this camera is a sort of trial run for a beefed up video camera version down the road. Sony certainly has a history of putting the guts of their photography line (NEX-5 & A99) into camcorder packages (VG-20/30, EA50, VG900, etc.). It wouldn't surprise me if this camera and lens package came in a camcorder body with built in XLR's in the near future.

Which would still be pretty cool.

With SLOG and 10-bit XAVC recording - you'd have one hell of an all-in-one camera on your hands.

Any mentioning on the file clip size/time limits on video ?
I hear of no limitation when set on NTSC, but I cannot be sure as i do not see it mentioned .

I read it's 30 minutes. This camera is so appealing... Can't wait to read the reviews

that's gonna be very unlikely, but if sony should happen to get a few hundred requests for a codec that competes with the gh3, which could be considered a close competitor...

some interesting bits i noticed in the specs, listed on BH:

35mm-Equivalent Focal Length:

Still Image 3:2: 24-200mm
Still Image 4:3: 26-220mm
Still Image 16:9: 25-213mm
Still Image 1:1: 31-259mm
Movie 16:9 (SteadyShot Standard): 26-212mm
Movie 16:9 (SteadyShot Active Mode): 29-315mm
Movie 4:3 (SteadyShot Standard): 31-259mm
Movie 4:3 (SteadyShot Active Mode): 35-386mm

i'm not positive, but im wondering if standard SS is optical, and active means it's adding in digital sensor shift stabilization

another oddity:

Sensitivity
Still: Auto, ISO 125-12800 (expandable to ISO 80, 100)
Multi Frame NR: Auto, ISO 125-25600
Movie: Auto, ISO 125-6400 equivalent

so.... iso 25,600 is activated by multi frame NR, and not expansion?

I didn't mean in this body, just if they converted the camera into a video focussed model. With XAVC coming to cameras like the PMW-200 it wouldn't be a huge stretch - and the more cameras they push the codec onto, the better chance it has of becoming a standard.

Darren-> If it's the same as the RX100M2 (and I imagine it is), then yes, SS Standard is optical, and Active is digital.

29-315 is a pretty great range really, I wonder if the image will be affected with the crop in active mode? Anyone seen a release date or am I blind?
