FS7: Sony rumored to release new FS7

I've been grading my S-log3/S-Gamut3.Cine footage for HDR10 exclusively ever since I mastered Resolve enough to do it. I'm grading for my Samsung SUHD KS8000 TV, which is 95% of P3-DCI and rated for 1000 nits (with the peak value of almost 1,500). No "in-camera-Rec.2020" is required!

As far as luminance is concerned and it's ability to capture this event wide ranges, the FS7'S abilities were never doubted... more than 10 stops is beyond the most common HDR10 spec. It's color that I was curious about (before the fall of the American empire tonight sort of put that into context). Is the FS7 "good enough" to shoot HDR content as-is. Yes. I believe it more than meets the color demands of DCI-P3 as well. I wasn't questioning that either. It's about if, or how, it will capture the full BT.2020 color gamut.

It doesn't matter much now-- but at some point soon it might, depending on what you do and what requirements are potentially forced on you. There's also the fact that capturing more of what you need (than absolutely necessary) usually produces a superior result. Like 14 stops of DR can provide the option of subtler transitions (in a selective grade) on a 6.5 stop display than could have been achieved with a 6.5 stop camera, giving you zero room to move in post. Like how 8K makes better 4K-- or audio recordings sampled at 96kHz/24 bits can render finer details (or provide more room for manipulation later). A wider, finer palate of colors can give you more color options, even if your display can't show the full rec.2020 spectrum. HDR is a confusing concept because it wraps up several things in one label, and we lack the displays to even visualize these theoretical color and luminance limits.

Sony told me they will wait and see how much demand is for REC.2020 on FS7 original before deciding whether to release it as a firmware update to FS7 original. If it happens though it may be a paid upgrade. I saw the camera last week and played with it for a bit, wasnt allowed to take footage, but it was a production model. Serial number 10. Mount is solid as hell , opposite direction to PL for locking, and the new 18-110 lens is sweet.

Pricing is way out there and not finalised yet - some Sony people told me 12,000 USD, others said $10,000. I also heard 11,000 + Euros , but given the way exchange rates our out of control today it will be a while before there is a final price.

it's ofiicial now. Jost got an email from a dealer (I am not an affiliate)

11.200,- net

11,200 is tentative. A lot of dealers have differenet prices in the UK and EU. This price will certainly change before the camera ships. I was told this directly from Sony people who are directly involved with the camera, so dont take any price you see anywhere as etched in stone. Especially EU pricing , currency exch rates are too shaky

Looks like a great camera! Though I am quite content with my FS5, I'm kinda glad Sony only did a marginal increase in specs and features. Hopefully they slow things down a bit when it comes to camera refresh timelines.

I saw from a pic that A. Chapman has put up that the "PL" mount locks the other way from real PL mount.. thats going to be really awkward .. and counter intuitive .. did some one at sony just put it on back to front ?? what possible reason for that.. big mistake I think..
