FS5: Sony releases Venice REC709 3D LUT

I didn't download the luts. But in the article he says: "I have created a set with offsets for both the Zacuto and Small HD viewfinders and monitors and finally I have also created sets of LUT’s for use with S-Log2 so users of the original A7s or those that wish to shoot with S-Log2 on an 8 bit camera are not left out."

So there should be a version for s-log2 in the package.:)

I guess that's my fault. I may not have made it clear that I was just referring to the single LUT that was in the folder Cine EI Camera. He did state that he did make LUT's with different offsets, etc. I'm on my iPad and not my laptop right now, so I can't look at the entire DL, but I believe he had around 10 different versions, maybe more.

I think it's safe to say that a LUT won't turn a FS5 or FS7 into a Venice. There's a lot more to the image generated by a camera than a LUT. That's besides the point that no one in their right mind is going to shoot a major studio picture with an FS7, which doesn't have the rugged construction of a Venice or its I/O. And of course the Venice is FF, so there is a look you will never be able to match in software.

Now if Sony somehow makes the F55 match the Venice, then things will get a lot more murky, but who would buy an F55 over a Venice at that price? The days of the F55 are probably numbered anyways.

The EVA1 can be intercut with the Varicam. They are very similar, but again they are two different beats.

RED is a Byzantine mess as far as sensors and color science goes, so lets not even go there.

The only manufacturer that really is identical across the entire product line is Arri, because they essentially use the same sensor from the Alexa Mini to the A65 and except for resolution they all look pretty much exactly alike. Hell, my 8 year old Alexa EV looks 99% identical to any current model.

wow interesting read.

I've been thinking of upgrading FS5 to FS5M2 for only one reason, the venice color profile.

Shouldn't the same result be possible using either camera?
FS5M2 color profile = FS5M1 SLOG3 with Venice LUTS?

From what I can see, the Venice SLOG Lut looks different, a lot closer to the old "Sony Video," look. The straight FS5M2 Venice color profile footage, not much floating around, looks wildly different to me.

It seems the best test would be to shoot FS5M2 with Venice profile and then shoot SLOG3 of exact same shot and try to match them using LUT.

Also to point out a funny, I liked this unintentional Dwight Shrute reference by Harry Lime above:

" They are very similar, but again they are two different beets."

Useful thread - thanks. I hadn't realised that the Sony Venice LUT might work as an alternative to the original Sony LC709 LUT on the FS7.

To my eye/brain, the Venice LUT reminds me of the kind of skin tones I got out of the Canon C300 standard colours - slightly warmer yellow, but more pleasing to my eye than the Sony magenta-leaning LC709 LUT.

A direct comparison from a recent shoot of mine below. Sorry - quite compressed, but DVX restrictions on file size make it difficult to upload anything more useful:

I applied the Venice LUT and compared to the regular 709A lut on some old FS7 material and to me it looked just like a bit of added contrast so nothing gained.

I stumbled across a Venice tweaked 709 LUT that I truly don't mind. It's on Charlie Anderson blog posts. He's a Local 600 Digital Imaging Technician and he's made his tweaked Venice 709 LUT freely available. There is a download link to it on his blog site. Have a read of the blog to see how this LUT came about. It all dates back to April this year. I've been using it on some jobs on the FS7 and I and more importantly clients seem to like it. Much prefer it to the original with its green cast and I prefer the 'skins' on his tweaked version. They have as he says more 'pop'. I don't think he would mind his still samples replicated here as he has them up on his blog for all the world to see. One is the original Venice Type A and the other is the Charlie tweaked version. Can you tell the difference? :)
