Sony PMW-X70

Any idea what "4K ready" means? I'm guessing like the 700... you have to get a 5R recorder or something like that?

Have you seen any footage out of this camera? Just curious. Thanks for the post.

I downloaded raw files and avid doesnt recognize even installing the plugin from sony for xavc so i i ran Adobe media encoder and, of course, adobe can handled the files very well but, did you see red frames while converting or playing? because when i played a file in media encoder, there are a lot of red frames ¿?¿¿??

I popped the files into PP CC2014 and it played back without a hiccup or red frames. I even tried some 4k and HD footage from the F5/F55 and they played just as good. I'm on a win7 machine.

Curt - read back up this forum thread for more details. Sony has promised a paid update adding 4K to the camera. Depending on where you read, this will be out in late 2014/early 2015 but no word yet on the cost or whether it will entail shipping the camera to Sony for the upgrade.

There has been a real dearth of footage available, but a few have recently been posted on this forum. Strangely, the footage is very inconsistent - some looks great, some looks worse than the 1080p on an AX100. Frankly, I get better footage out of my 2011 Canon XF100 (single 1/3 inch chip), so I can't believe that what we've seen so far is indicative of the potential of the camera. We'll see.

Just found this footage - new (to me) and much better:

Note that this is downsized to 720 on Vimeo.

sounds like we need some better footage or at least something where the shooter is noting different settings on different shots (d zoom etc.) although i remember the early "reviews" saying that there was no quality loss up to 24x d zoom?

Thanks for letting me see the native clips. But to they still look mushy.

Unfortunately I have to agree. Also, perhaps I've just been spoiled by other cameras of late (BMCC, etc), but the dynamic range of this camera appears to be incredibly shallow, which somewhat negates the upgrade to 10 bit (I realize 10 bit is useful otherwise, but still... ). I'm still considering this camera for a studio lit sports project, but I'm really hoping for some more impressive samples to be released in the coming weeks.

If my understanding is correct, the sensor readout is natively 4k, and is being scaled down to 1080p in camera (no line skipping). After 12x optical zoom (13x+), the camera starts to crop the sensor, and by 24x, it's giving a 1:1 sensor readout. This means that you're technically losing quality in the sense that the camera isnt oversampling/subsampling as much as it zooms through the 13-24x range, however at no point does the camera lose quality beyond the 1:1 readout (unless you enable the extra digital zoom feature).

Here's the better Vimeo version, although the end result is much the same. A few clips are decent and give me hope, but then the rest just look flat, muddy, and dated. I'm a bit confused by this camera, as 4k sampled down to 1080 usually results in an oversharp image that needs to be softened. However in this case there just appears to be no detail... anywhere. There's plenty of headroom in the codec, so could it be that the lens is to blame and just can't resolve enough detail?

To me all three CX900, AX100 and X70 shares the same low quality 1080 image. But 4k from the AX100 looks fine so it isn't the lens or the sensor. It's the poorly implemented reduction of 4k to 1080p that is at play in combination with how the signal is treated and encoded.

if thats really the case then thats too bad. i dont need 4k right now, though the future proofing would have been nice, but nice 1080 really is a must.
