F5: Sony PL Lens Set version II

Do you happen to know what's the image circle cover on those? will they cover Epic 5K?

This is hard information to find. I did find someone quoting Matthew Duclos as saying "they should all cover the Dragon at 6k full frame with the exception of the 20mm which may vignette slightly at 6k full frame".

I will not speak overly praising or ill of any current product from another manufacturer. That would be rude. I tested the Sony Cine Alta primes when they came out and I encourage others to do such tests as well. These lenses have not sold well so it may be difficult to get one's hands on demo lenses to test. I can tell you that these tests are worth doing on any glass, as are others for determining field curvature, broken artifacts, focal planing, and numerous other optical qualities.

there is no way for me to to any tests at all for any "pro" tech locally. its just not being sold here. all i can buy locally - is a preorder, everything i buy always cats in bags... thats why i trying if possible to get as much info as possible,-
It must be great in usa, when u can visit a store, or rental place and put your hands on anything u d like, but its impossible with in small eu countries...

Still even if sony primes is a black horse, i still think its better buy then Samyaungs...
Also i would not compare the weight to Zeiss Compact primes, as far as i know zeiss cp lenses are still lenses just in better housing, and with improved iris, thats why they are lighter, so it must be pretty much the same as few of my zeiss slr lenses.. i would like to get a true cinema lens, ofcourse with in my budget....

Be aware, I've heard very good things about the Xeen lenses. I have a friend that's bought some, so I hope to do some tests of my own before too long. While I know that the Sony's image will look great, I use my primes for handheld work, and I just can't get over the weight of these lenses. I shot with the Schnieder Xenar III lenses, and they were heavy; the Sony's are nearly a pound heavier than the Schnieders.

if anyone have or will have an access to anything, plz u r very welcome to post your tests or clips that u think are relevant to tests, or may show how the lens work in real life.... i am sure many of dvx users will find it useful!

Have you seen the test I did with the Xeens among other lenses on the FS7? Might be of some assistance to you at the moment. Let me know if you have any questions!

Awile ago there was a discussion on DVXuser about the Sony PL lenses, but not sure if any samples were posted. Check the Cinematography forum, & it's sub-forum, Lenses / Optics.

What about the first version of these lenses? You can find them cheap on ebay.

there is a reason why they are cheap ;-)
Some of them are really soft and almost unusable with subjects on a bright background.
I remember a comparison of these lenses with Rokinons on YT but I can't find it right now
The reputation of these lenses might be a reason why the series II did not sell well.

I'm interested in this comment. I have various mechanical primes, but I wouldn't use them handheld on my FS7, as it just doesn't have the heft I need to dampen micro vibrations. I use the primes only on sticks and have to resort to the 18-105 with IS for handheld.

How are you achieving solid handheld stuff in HD or even 4K on an FS7 with primes?

I've posted it in here months ago, but here's a quick test for comparison:

I love the extra zing I can get from good quality mechanical glass, but isn't handheld the elephant in the room?

If I was sat with Sony engineers, giving feedback, I'd be asking for similar quality glass, but with an optional IS module that can be slotted in for handheld work and then optically removed when on sticks, avoiding the potential degradation that the IS lens causes.

Just a thought, while we're all tempted by the low ticket price of this set.

I still own the three Sony primes that came with my F3. I sold the camera and kept the lenses a couple of years ago because they are nice lenses that I use often on my FS7 and F55. I also own a full set of Schneider Cine Xenars and I will tell you that the Sony's match up very well to the Schneiders. Of course, you might buy a lemon from eBay, but I'd say that if the Sony lenses are working properly, they are very good and nice and lightweight. I have no experience with the newer, heavier, Sony primes.

Like Doug, we owned an F3 with Sony's first round of primes. We've continued to use our Sony primes with the FS7, and we like their look a lot. The build quality leaves something to be desired, but optically they are great lenses.

We've used our FS7 with these prime lenses to do quite a bit of handheld work, and we don't seem to have problems with too much vibration. However, all of our handheld work is very controlled shots, not walk around "get what you can" shots.

Which adapter do you use with the old Sony PL lenses, the metabones ?

Do you use the metabones 15mm rod support too ?

Thanks

The F5 has a PL provision so I'm assuming your discussing the FS7. Haven't used PL lenses on the FS7 yet, but if the need arises I'm going to try Wooden Camera's solution.

It requires purchasing their Top Plate, & E-Mount to PL Mount Pro (FS7). These pieces mate together which provides additional support.

I use a PL to e-mount adapter made by Hot Rod Cameras. And I also use a Zacuto Universal VCT baseplate with 15mm rods for support.
