FS5: Sony officially announces the FS5 Mark II

For those who are disappointed with the new FS5II, you should get the FS7. You really think that the new FS5 would have similar specs to the FS7?

Well, it could have been same price as the FS7 (original)...

To me AF is important, and the FS7 has really bad AF... my dream cam is an FS5 with 10bit internal, ibis and really good AF... until that happens I’m sticking to my FS700...

Is this really correct? Sony said in press conference: "they have refined the color science, given the camera a more natural highlight roll off, improved skin tone rendition, and created a more elegant and organic looking image"

So they copy Venice then sell for 1/10th price?

I actually commend Sony for this. Their color science in the original fs5 was beyond terrible.

I am surprised by Sony because they usually cater to the specs crowd, but this targets those of us who care about the image quality more than anything, which is a nice change of pace.**

The footage I have seen looks amazing and the skin tones are wonderful rendered.

I am always intrigued by people hating on a camera before they have seen one frame from it. THe images look superb and should speak for themselves.

Never gonna happen. Sony would not sell 2 similar products at the same price. Why would they do that?
For good AF, your 2 options are C200 and C300mkII.
That’s not an option...
guess I just want a 10bit A7III in a FS5 body... guess waiting it is... ;)

Would this affect the slog2/slog3 footage ? I assume it's only the standard profiles and what is coming off the sensor to slog/raw should be the same and you can grade to taste exactly like you do now ?

It would not affect slog2/slog3 which is just the gamma curve. New color would just be a new color profile from the menu, or perhaps they did it to the camera as a whole.. hard to say right now.

I see so no advantage for those of us that color/grade and use slog. Other than the new hfr stuff.

From their website:

"FS5 II features an all-new default look with beautiful highlights and subtle, well rendered facial tones for more emotive visuals where your subjects naturally stand out. FS5 II saves time in post production while still providing all the flexibility and creative latitude you require. There’s also an additional nine Picture Profiles, including ones customised for S-Log2, S-Log3 and a profile specifically tuned to provide vibrant, high contrast visuals for creators who desire a DSLR-style look. Each profile can be individually adjusted to suit your specific requirements and switched between in seconds."

cool, but I seems to be written in a way that you can't say for sure anything new is in slog2/slog3 just that slog2/3 are included, but maybe there is. Hopefully someone can ask them at nab.

The only thing you can say is that there are an additional nine Picture Profiles, including ones customised for S-Log2 & S-Log3.

The example I provided is based on the default picture profile. It will be interesting to see how this is comparable to log2. Certainly, it renders skin tones beautifully and they claim it renders highlights just as well. I think we just need to wait and see before casting stones. The skin tones in the example above give me pause to think.

I think they’re going for a better ‘out of box’ look. This camera is geared for beginners. No reason to sell the current camera if you’re a raw shooter.

Did you even read what I wrote above? There is more than likely advantages to the color science in log. And you are making a lot of assumptions in your statment. Generally, people who are in the market for this camera neither have the time nor the money to be spending on intensive post production coloring. If i can get the same or better results with slog2 and/or the picture profiles, making my results more predictable and improving my skin tones, why not? I've just saved a lot of time and money for my business. I am incredulous to your argument.

From the literature it sounds like they probably added a default gamma curve that matches a Venice 709 curve. This is kind of a big deal since currently you can't get good color out of an fs5 without shooting slog and you cant properly monitor slog without an external monitor with LUTs. Hopefully it will add a color-baked mode that doesn't sacrifice color quality.
