Sony NEX/Axx Firmware hacking

Have been following this thread for a bit... It all sounds awesome. I am a NEX-5n user, mostly for photo, but for some video as well.

From the video side, just 720p in general would be great, especially with a high data rate. 1080 is really overkill for me–I (and many others I expect) prefer a slightly lower resolution with less compression.

And from the photo side, it would be really cool to have the focus peaking deactivate with a half press of the shutter button.

Anyway I would gladly contribute should the project need it to move forward.

Yes, it is AVCHD.

But it isn't written as 1080p120 or 1080p240. If you record 5 seconds at 120fps, the camera writes it to the card as 25 seconds at 24fps (If it's set to 24p mode).

cheers for the info. I cant get my head around how that works - a few beers are blocking my thought process. So in effect the camera shoots at 240fps and then conforms it to 24p. if you want to play back in real time speed you then speed it up by 5x?

Haha yeah that's basically what happens, except 240p of course is 10x speed. My brother just got the camera, we were playing around with it today. It's really awesome.

Hi guys !

I'm new on this forum and I really enjoy reading that the NEX hack would finally arrive ! I couldn't resist to register and provide you encouragement !

Just one question : when you talk about the 46mbps datarate, what does that mean exactly ? Would we be able to get higher framerates ?
If yes, yeaaahhhh =D If not, I think that it would also be interesting to explore this way in order to get slowmo capabilities =)

Thanks and good luck !

Okay thank you for the explanation. So I hope that a framerate improvement would be possible with the hack =)

This thread doesn´t seem to be going anywhere. Other then a lot of curious people that are very excited, the only people who hold the actual info to get this started don´t seem to be very interested in moving forward (one wants money and the other one has a friend who is working on it and won´t share). This sucks :(

It sounds all very promising, but sadly we don't see results. I wish we could see some proof of the higher bitrate.
This could be done by shooting a very short video in front of a mirror so we can see the camera. When the original AVCHD file is shared, then atleast we have some proof.

I hope to hear something from Mojod20 soon as i'm getting a bit sceptical. Maybe he's on a holiday...
And maybe someone1.00 booked some progress?

I'm working on firmware repacking. By the way. This process is absolutely open. It's implemented in updater. So everybody can write some docs about it. But i'm really sceprical on this since nobody want to do anything.
Version modification is my next target. It's on camera side and will work on this for my a55.

Again, you decide to talk negatively about someone else's hard work. Why not do something towards the project yourself instead of sitting all high and mighty? While everyone else is being patient and enthusiastic about what these guys are doing, you have to be the one to come in and lower the tone with your ignorance yet again. -No one wants money for the project - they suggested maybe a fund to purchase some test cameras, which is more than justified - why should they brick their own camera?. it is someone else who has then come in and suggested they start a kickstarter program. What you fail to understand is that like me, the people posting up excited comments are here to let the guys who are doing the hard work know that it will be appreciated. If you want to be all complacent go make your own hack and ignore this topic!

Since I´m one of the people who might be whiling to put money on the table to make this happen and since this is a public forum I´m entitled to whattever I want to say, unless I´m actually cursing or seriously offending someone.
Comparing what Vitaly did to the micro 4/3 system to what is being done here you can see how the process was crystal clear, which is how things should be when investment is needed. People DO want to get involved, but this only happen once other people SHARE information. I´ll happily get the Kickstarter initiative started on my name once how things are going to move forward is clear for everyone. I cannot simply start a Kickstarted project saying "Give money to get the NEX hacked".
Don´t bring your personal frustrations from your other thread in here. If anyone is breaking the forum rules it´s you, with your constant insults.

Stop assuming these people owe you anything. Save your over professional approach to attacks and critique for people that actually cause you harm, or are in a commercial domain. Leave your negativity out when commenting on labors of love. It is clear you are money driven and have no grasp of basic courtesy and tact when discussing other peoples' projects. Think yourself lucky these clever guys are doing anything. You sit on the fence moaning, just like your ill informed complaining about my own work - I, and everyone else don't want you disheartening the ones actually making an effort here. They don't owe you anything until you have laid down money or other forms of payment. Until then, sit back and wait patiently instead of assuming these guys owe you something.

Constant insults? I'm just the coin flip. As an optimist I am entitled to argue against you, the pessimist.

I will be setting your posts to ignore from now on because you have a habit of bringing down the positivity here.

Realism and pessimism are 2 different things. I´m super pumped about this initiative and given the chance I would gladly help, but with no info nobody can assist.
If you talk so openly about "labor of love" why don´t you just start giving your products away?
On your other thread you complain that I speak for "most" but you come here and do the same.
Yes, go ahead and ignore my posts. I guess the truth hurts.

P.S - I would suggest that like Vitaly did a new thread is open clearly stating "technical discussion only!". This way people like oldman Rich and my self won´t be able to thread jack important matter.

What would you rather have: a developer who spends most of his time answering loads of questions raised by others and barely has any free time for actual development, or a developer who focuses on actual coding and only posts updates when progress is made?

If progress is really being made, I suggest creating a new dedicated forum (or google group, etc.) since it's much easier to manage and you can have different topics (unlike this thread, in which everyone posts anything).

Just give me all the necessary info and I´ll do it. I just need a tech guy to back me up.

What info are you expectiong to have to start a hack project? It's 50/50 possibility. The only difference here is that i've already described operation system here. Processor type was already known. Everything else in fog for now.

I´d rather have a developer who actually has access to the equipment and means to do research. I don´t need the developer to be answering questions on a daily basis on Kickstarter but I would need him to help me write and organize the project before actually going ahead and post it there.

Developer never will do it. Free job with reporting? Are you kidding me? :)

Don't you've just mentioned some people who whant to help?
