Sony NEX/Axx Firmware hacking

"one of the tests was showing av 46mbps" - just to be clear, is this with the NEX 5n? Does the hack generate more heat? That little box got quite hot even shooting it's own default video datarate, so perhaps Richard Gale's housing will become essential!

I think that there is no need to create another thread... this one already has an audience. someone1.00 and mojod20 could share what they know on this thread.
If some "breakthrough" is acheved, it could be posted on the first post anouncing it and giving further details...
Thread fragmentation is quite harmful for keeping people informed.
Lets wait until mojod20 posts his findings an lets see what happens from there!
I got to admit I'm getting a little excited about this, I wish I had the technicall skill to jump on this train.
Anyway, keep us posted guys!
And if mojod20 could provide some solid evidence, we'll it wouldnt be a bad idea to reconsider the kickstarter iniciative posted earlier!

Anyway, happy hacking!

good to know this is the official thread.
If so now I know where to look for updates and contributions.
Good suggestion by sibero80 to update first post with current status.

Right then. Ill start by saying I have actually been waiting for this for a long time, but all I can say now is that its do-able and I dont know what all the fuss was about ;) (I can say that because I had no part in it!!). Got a bit excited seeing it myself tonight. My job here is done and I am going to post something on here soon as he wont! Did I say I was a tiny bit excited????????

edit: one of the tests was showing av 46mbps and topped out at 9 mins 23! little room, summer evening! Dark room with 1.8 50mm looked very nice.

WOW! A doubling of bitrate is superb! is it as simple as updating the camera with a modified/rewritten firmware? I bet 46mb/s avchd looks great!

Looking forward to your update. give the man a cigar!

I was looking at some GH2 - NEX7 video comparissons and I have a question for someone1.00 , Vitaliy Kiselev and mojod20.

(Theoretically speaking... off course)
If possible.. how could SHARPNESS be improved via firmware hack? can the scaler/encoding method be modified in any way?
Or what conditions must be met (hardware/software) in order to be able to modify that.

Im asking this, because so far the only 2 factors preventing this camera to be a video monster, are SHARPNESS and BITRATE.

If you can increase the bitrate the footage will be less susceptible to degradation in post, hence you will be able to increase sharpness digitally. Of course, this also has to do with the lenses you´re using.

The higher resolution GH2 can produce is due to the method used for rescaling from sensor pixels to fullHD.
GH2 is the only digital camera that does pixel binning, while all the others (Canon, Nikon, Sony) use line skipping.
That's what causes softer images, moireè effect and aliasing jagged lines.
There's nothing you can do with hacking about this problem.

sharpness / detail is not the problem with the nex range in my opinion. it's the macro blocking that can occur in dimly lit areas of a shot that are most troubling. the perception of cleaner dynamic range will be improved with a bitrate increase. smaller blocks of compressed color will also go some way towards making the pictures more detailed.

Second the kickstarter suggestion, 5 or 10 bucks is little for the single shooter compared to what a hack offers in the end...

Nice to see how things are going with the NEX firmware hack.
I'm also wondering what camera mojod20's 'friend' is using to get 46 mbps and if the hack works on any NEX camera.

I don't see why Sony would sue someone for improving their intentionally "crippled" camera's.
I don't think that Sony has to worry that sales will slow down as new NEX camera's introduce hardware changes like build in flash / wifi / GPS and things like that can't be fixed by a firmware hack.

Some things I would like to see with the hacked firmware:
- Bracket mode with higher increments (for HDR in RAW mode)
- Higher AV bitrate
- Option to choose between PAL (50fps/25fps) and NTSC (60fps/30fps/24fps) I can use the extra 10 fps for slow motion shots.

cheers:)

When is this 46mbps test going to be uploaded? It´s going to be much easier to get a bunch of people helping if information is actually shared instead of withheld. Share, my friend, share!
I just got a NEX-7 and now I´m REALLY eager to see ths hack working.

wow 720p 100/120fps would be nuts! hadn't even crossed my mind. what codec does the fs700 export out its high framerates? AVCHD?

Yes, it is AVCHD.

But it isn't written as 1080p120 or 1080p240. If you record 5 seconds at 120fps, the camera writes it to the card as 25 seconds at 24fps (If it's set to 24p mode).
