Sony m4/3 with Exmor R sensor?

Sony is rumored (http://sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-will-launch-a-new-camera-on-november-18/) to be introducing a new cam on Nov 18th that will either be m4/3 (not aware that they are part of the m4/3 group), 4/3, or similar to m4/3 with a proprietary mount. It's positioning is clear it will feature "Full HD video recording. With the camera Sony wants to compete against the Panasonic GH1."

With any of these mounts it may be an opportunity to use lenses collected for GH1 mount.

It will feature the Exmor R backlit sensor that seems to give low light advantages in informal testing. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1009&message=33163105&changemode=1 Just keep in mind that Sony sensors mounted on Sony cam have traditionally delivered less than market leading low light results. Although the Canon G11 has a Sony sensor and perhaps this accounts for its significantly improved low light performance when compared with the Canon G10.

Some Sony dSLRs already use a second sensor to give live view during exposure, so Sony is primed to recognized the advantages of the m4/3 system.

Of course, Fuji is rumored to be introducing a m4/3 cam with its very good low light sensors.

Well SonyAlphaRumors just changed their post to exclude much of the speculation.

Here is the orginal post:
SonyAlphaRumors has got an important information from one of our most trusted sources. Sony is ready to launch a new camera on November 18! The camera will have the new (4/3 ?) exmor sensor and Full HD video recording. With the camera Sony wants to compete against the Panasonic GH1.
UPDATE: One more very good source confirmed us the rumor is true! It will become a very competitive product!
UPDATE2: Still no idea what kind of lens-mount Sony will use.
UPDATE3: Two more sources do confirm the camera announcement. Anyway nobody still can say me if Sony will use their own proprietary mount or the MicroFourThirds mount. Most of them do believe Sony will use their own proprietary mount.
UPDATE4:It seems very likely that Sony will use their proprietary mount and not follow the MicroFourThirds standard.

Keep following us in the next days. We are working to get more infos!

Here is the revised post (http://sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-will-launch-a-new-camera-on-november-18/):

UPDATE: The only thing we know is that Sony will launch a direct GH1 competitor on mid November. We do not know if the camera will be the first model of a mirrorless system. We are working to get more infos!

Keep following us in the next days.

Since I cannot remove a thread I felt I had to post the changes in speculation. Less sensor size speculation, just that it is designed to compete against the GH1

Here I am talking to myself. Here is the latest rumor, and it now appears that the Sony will compete with the GH1 but not be a m4/3. I will just wait for the Fuji to get low light.

43 rumors reports (http://43rumors.com/ft4-sony-is-ready-to-announce-a-new-panasonic-gh1-competitor-on-november-18/)

UPDATE: 43rumors sources do also confirm the next Sony camera is coming.
UPDATE2: It is almost sure that Sony will not join the MFT system. They will have a completely independent system and lens-mount.

Again I wish there was some way to pull threads so I could post only the most correct information, if you can call rumors information.

Sounds good, too bad it's an independent lens mount and system :(
As it's from Sony, you can be assured that it will use their own Alpha mount. However, having its own lens mount doesn't have to mean anything bad necessarily. The GH1 only has, really, two lenses that fit it -- but because its mount is so flexible, you can adapt any type of lens to it with a cheap lens mount adapter.

According to Wikipedia, the Alpha mount was actually developed by Minolta, so Minolta lenses will fit on Alpha SLRs. I googled and found that there are M42 and Nikon and Hasselblad and Minolta MD/MC and Pentax and Canon adapters available for Alpha mount.

I don't know if you could put PL or c-mount lenses on it, but you can fit most every other SLR lens type on it, so there shouldn't be any problem with it being an Alpha mount...

how do you guys the competition directed at the GH1 (from sony and fuji) will affect the used or new prices of the gh1? will that also affect the release of a new firmware that offers more than what we had in previous firmware updates, thanks

Prices are affected by supply and demand. If a new product comes out and everybody wants it instead of the GH1 and nobody buys GH1s anymore, then it's possible the price would come down. If the new product comes out and it's equally appealing, and there continues to be more demand than supply for both products, then prices wouldn't be affected at all.

When a company is selling all they can make, there's no real reason for them to change anything about what they're doing. If they can't sell them anymore, then you might see changes in features, updated models, or lower prices, or whatever else they think they need to do to resuscitate sales.

I am a former Minolta AF (aka Maxxum) mount user, long time before Sony took over, and unfortunately you can't mount Canon lenses (almost sure you can't mount Nikon either) but Minolta MD you can only use with a glass-adapter, so there is no use to me...

Pentax M42 and Hasselblad are true... but the strenght of this mount are the Minolta AF lenses from the 80's and the new modern Zeiss line.

Given it's Sony, safe to expect: AVC-HD again and a crippled product. LoL.

I Kid!

No really, AVC-HD...

It is likely to be AVCHD, I'm sure, yes... but a proper implementation of AVCHD beats XDCAM-EX. The "good stuff" (PH mode) is a really solid codec.

There are several, yes, but I was thinking only about the video-enabled lenses, which are what I would expect most folks on this forum would want to be using...

Didn't Sony state over and over that it would not be making a video SLR? Or since this might not technically be an SLR they're not going back on that?

I think actually most of the best results are coming from manual focus lenses from everything from old Canon FDs to the Lomo Anamorphics used in one of the MonsterFest shorts.

Meanwhile, I'm using my kit lens, as my adapter just misses me as I travel around.

I guess Sony has a more established line of lenses though so who knows. I have a feeling, no matter what with the optics, if it's some kind of Ex1/GH1 hybrid, I'll be robbing banks to get one!

As always whenever anyone remotely brings it up:

43 rumors account of the ricoh introduction next week 10 or 11 Nov. are contradictory as to sensor size. two cams? The only constant is EVF and mirrorless, so great hopes that the Ricoh and the Samsung will take adapters to let all our lenses work. Great possibilities for GH! owners, and shows that mirrorless lens investment now will probably work in many different mounts. That is what I think whenever a get a new lens for my GH1.

There's also Ricoh and Samsung announcements this month too, gonna be pretty exciting I think.

Quick note on adapters--they generally serve two purposes:

1) Change from one type of mount to another.

2) Situate the lens at the proper flange focal distance.

#2 is why you can create an m4/3 adapter for essentially any lens. i.e. by eliminating the mirror, the m4/3 format drastically reduces the flange focal distance, so situating the lens farther away from the sensor is relatively easy.

Whereas, if you have a camera body with a long FFD (like Sony, Konica, Minolta)--meaning, you can't easily mount the lens closer to the sensor--the only way to use a lens with a shorter FFD (e.g. Canon) is via the use of corrective optics. (Sort of like the Hubble Telescope.)

So, if this new camera/system is indeed mirrorless, I don't see why Sony wouldn't also decrease the FFD. (One of the main reasons for getting rid of the mirror is to reduce body size; note how much smaller the GH1, GF1, E-P1, etc. are relative to most DSLRs.) And that would mean that adapters could also be made for most lens types, including lenses that cannot currently be used on (mirrored) Sony DSLRs, just like with the m4/3 format. In fact, you would even need an "adapter" (more like a spacer tube) to use current alpha mount lenses, even if the actual physical mount connection is the same.

HTH - Mark
