Sony Introduces 61 Megapixel α7R IV

Ok, yeah, i’ve not seen anything black magic that suggested 15, especially the 2013 models. But i’ll definitely go try one out. Which one do you recommend?

The cameras that i’ve messed with that have impressed on the dr side are the alev iii cameras and the red gemini.

Everything else i’ve shot with just clips a little too abruptly, or requires digging up the digital shadows.

Cool! You think the G2 is the one to try? It being the newest and all?

Forgot the C200 and C700 (one of the models) claiming 15 stops, but again...Canon is generous with their numbers, IMO.

The bm’s are pretty optimistic about their numbers too.

This reminds me of the GH2 days:

If we're going to talk about unrealistic dynamic range claims, let me remind you that with the original a7S Sony claimed 15.3 stops of DR (link). I owned that camera, and no, it did not have 15 stops of DR. For RAW stills, dxomark measured it at 13.2 stops (link). In video mode, maybe 12 if you're feeling very optimistic about your NR plugin of choice.

So, basically, the last four+ years companies have just been bold face lying?

I think only four years is generous! :) There has always been creative truth stretching in this industry. From the pixel shifted 1080p to the Canon Uncompressed* output from the 5DMKIII. Sadly I do not trust what any of these companies say

* the path from the compressed mush through the HDMI port is technically uncompressed as it is not compressed further...

Anyone recalls the stated power of the American automobiles up to the 1970's?

PS. That said, the new Corvette looks pretty hot. Its stated power is 495 HP but the execs are also saying that it can go 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Mustang GT rates itself at 460 but can barely squeeze in under 4.0 in automatic. So, the Vette is likely considerably over 500 while GT is around 400 to the wheels.

On other other hand, Supra claimed 335 and 4.1. It was tested as high as 376 and 3.8. BMW 440i is 335 (the same engine as in Supra) and 4.4 while Genesis G70 is 365 and 4.9.

The manufacturers are not always forthright.

Ha, I suppose I am thinking it more like a car claiming to have 12 valves, when it only has 10v.

Totally. Obviously the trend has been longer, I just meant on the 15stop dr spec. which I think has not been something much officially advertised prior to four years ago. There was 14+.

This was the comparison that made me lose interest in BM:

This video was actually very positive towards the BM, but it is pretty obvious the latitude on the BM is not 15stops. Whether the camera has sparkles and synapses of details deep down in the noise floor enough to justify a 15stops DR rating or not, is shifty.

I understand the whole bang for buck mentality. Even the original DM looked good in the sweet spot. Anyways, I get it. But it really hasn't been that great of a camera company. The G2 looks good. There is something nice about the way BM owns their warm toned look now.

ARRI's cameras are the only ones producing a real-time HDR signal from two signal gain stages at the sensor level. It's been 9 years since the ALEXA came out and nothing can really touch it when it comes dynamic range.
