Sony HDV Deck HVR-M35AU (or 25AU/15AU) - Analog to Digital conversion?

I'm looking into buying an old mini-DV/HDV deck and I've narrowed it down to Sony's MxxAU line since they have playback support for Canon's old 30/24F format. However I wanted to know if they could take an analog signal from the S-video or composite inputs and convert it to DV on the fly over the firewire port without having to record it to a DV tape first?

I had an old Sony Digital-8 that could do this and I was wondering if these decks could do it too.

I wasn't quite sure which forum to ask this since it's not a camera so if anyone knows a better forum for this question please let me know. Thank you!

In PAL land the HVR-M25AU will definitely convert analog to DV on the fly. The 25 also has HDMI out and in the past, I have often just hung an Atomos recorder off the HDMI out and captured to ProRes rather than DV. I can't recall with the 15 since it's so long since I've used one. I feel pretty sure it will do the analog to DV on the fly but I don't remember it having an HDMI port. For capturing DV on the fly on a PC with scene detection I've used ScenalyserLive which is now downloadable at no charge along with a serial number. It also allows you to split, rename and mark files for deletion as you capture them. It also allows you to capture over the 4GB file limitation if set up for that in its options.

Awesome, thank you very much

The 15 doesn't have an HDMI port, but I'm now going for the 25 to have that HDMI capture you detailed as an option, and I don't really need anything the 35 has over the 25.

Also extra thanks for the free ScLive tip!
