FS7: Sony FX9 v Canon C500 mkII

Sometimes crop modes offer other benefits, such as super slow motion, or very very fast rolling shutter (nearly global shutter, a "sports mode" for fast moving action).

Very true! Not a factor I'd thought of (I'll blame the fact that both of my big boy cameras have global shutters for that).

I have the Studio for narrative/commercials, and an F55 for documentary/run ‘n gun stuff.

I like my shutters global.

OK. So you sold your F3 I guess? Interesting choice of F55 at this point specially that you have alexa. Kind of same type of camera. I guess you got screaming deal in a F55? Is it because its more broadcast friendly over an alexa non studio or mini? Or because you need 4k?

Interesting comparison w/ a car commercial and Alister walking around outside. haha To be fair there's no apples to apples footage as of yet. And I know this isn't what you're going for, but upon watching both of these back to back a handful of times I actually prefer the colors of Alister's video over the color in the car commercial. Back when I shot Canon camcorders I never liked the way they handled the yellows and greens in grass -- especially when they're hit with bright sunlight. I recognize this is personal taste.

Hopefully we'll see some side by side footage soon. Cinema5D's YouTube channel put out a panel where both cameras shared the stage yesterday, and they said they'd be running some comparison tests between the two soon.

Getting back to these two videos -- I expect the FX9 will perform better than the C500ii in lower light/higher ISO conditions. That dual base ISO starting at 4000 is going to be killer. In the comments of the C500ii commercial the producer noted the client wanted him to crop into the image more than he would've preferred so that explains some of the noisier/pixelated shots. But that's being picky as well. If I'd shot the car commercial I'd be very proud of my work, and either camera will be capable of producing great material.

They've both got cars in them LOL.

To be fair, I think they are both great cameras. The only sensible points I can make about the two films is the C500 will be easy to put on a gimbal/drone and also easy to shoot proper anamorphic.

One of my reservations about the FX9 is that it only fits on the more expensive gimbals.
On the other hand, for the price difference I could also get a Mōvi Pro. Or an A7SIII (whenever that is released) and a smaller gimbal.
But if you need more than internal codec then the FX9 on a gimbal is not very feasible. Especially not for raw.

I'm thinking that corporate clients will go crazy for the FX9 after shooting a presenter walking toward camera on a 70-200mm and the AF Face recogition nailing the focus. There will be less retakes for focus; happier actor, happier director and less stressed DoP.

Chappell:
white balance in Cine EI and Dual ISO and though you did mention it above Autofocus all 3 are big deal.
Will you make more money , not at first, but if it becomes the popular flavor camera it will make a difference.

Personally I'm liking it especially if it will intercut with existing FS7s

This would be huge for some of my more temperamental talent that also sign the checks...
