FS7: Sony FX9 v Canon C500 mkII

24-105mm will be super useful. Jump between FF and S35mm modes - and you have a 16-105mm equivalent range (in S35mm terms).

Hope they make a manual cine version of it someday. That would be a doco/actuality delight.

I think that will be the go-to run around outside for a lot of people on this camera. They had one on the demo. It wasn't bad.

I get so lazy with the Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art OSS on my FS7 that i have to force myself into thinking creatively with the primes and bokeh.

The zoom is just that good, and unbeatable at the price point. Only really take out my primes for specialty work.

I dont think this is lazy. You just have a bit of kit that allows you to think about story.

Well yeah, i dont have an assistant so it makes sense for me. But i can see in post i should`ve would`ve could`ve used other lenses. So im pushing myself these days to spend some time with my 1.4`s too.

Especially falling in love with the Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 Art i bought before summer. So nice bokeh on it.

I`ve been planning to buy Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 for some time. But with Canon 500D II FF out, im not so sure i will need another crop lens for long.

If you think you'll go the full-frame Canon, a 24-70mm f/2.8 would make much more sense than the Sigma - it would give you a focal range and depth of field equivalent to 16-47mm f/2 on S35mm. Which (as much as I love the Sigma on S35mm) is a vastly more useful range. And the overall size and weight of the two are very comparable.

Here's a recording from ProAV's demo session on the camera:

Not a lot of new info unfortunately:

- 70w power draw shooting 5.9k raw (I assume at 60fps, but that isn't clarified)
- 30w power draw shooting 4k XFAVC (or whatever their h264 codec is called)

Questions I still have about the camera (and would appreciate people asking at any future demo nights they might attend):

- How quickly can you switch between S35mm, FF and S16mm modes?

- Can monitoring features (waveform and false colour) be set to monitor the underlying log signal, while the camera displays the image with a monitoring LUT on top of it? This is a big deal for judging exposure.

- Possibility of in-camera anamorphic crop modes (4:3, 6:5 and 1:1), to reduce datarates (and hopefully expand framerate options)?

- Possibility of more anamorphic de-squeeze modes? It currently only has 1.3x and 2x, but really needs 1.5x and 1.8x as well to cover all the options.

- Possibility of a streamlined v-mount battery plate, with no space lost to audio hardware, and more power outputs (really needs 3 or 4 12v outputs in DTAP or RS connections)?

- Possibility of ordering the camera with the lens mount of your choice (rather than with the standard EF mount by default)?

Lol that's the demo I was at, I saw a guy with an Osmo, didn't realise he shot the whole demo. That's me banging on about Egypt and asking questions about power draw/ISO/Nits/stabilisation/trade-ins etc.

After the demo we spent a few hours using the camera and asking more questions so to answer your comments above.

Switching between 5.9K, S35, S16 etc is INSTANT.

Lots of V-Lock solutions from 3rd party vendors.

Lens mounts - Canon rep was very keen to offer any help you might need to sell the camera. I'd imagine if you ask your rep you might get lucky, but they'll probably offer you one at half price.

According to slashcam.de the rolling shutter for the C500 MII is:
Fullframe: 15,9ms in 6K, 4K and 2K/FullHD. (The best they have measured for a fullframe sensor)
S35-Sensor crop: 11,9 ms in 4K and in FullHD
S16-Crop: 5,5 ms in HD

Do you mean custom solutions for the C500ii? Or pre-existing solutions? I've already got multiple plates and cables that would let me throw a v-mount onto the camera easily enough. But it would be better to have options that integrate into the camera body itself, so you don't have to worry about external power cables getting damaged, or having to run rails out the back of the camera in order to mount it.

It sounds like the reps on your side of the world are rather more helpful than ours - I've only heard "probably not" or "it wouldn't save you much to buy the specific lens mount" from the guys down here. :/

I'm sure Canon are still feeling a little sore from just how badly the C700 appears to have flopped. Hopefully we can dig into that deeply Japanese sense of shame to get them to supply the camera the way we want it this time!

So far, I've only seen plates, (with the correct DC in cable) but have been told more solutions coming. I'm hoping for a small integrated plate too as I have no use for Module 2 other than the V-lock mount.

One thing worth noting, lots of people have moaned about the internal battery sticking out a little, and it was something I was keen to take a close look at - it's fine, very solid, you won't knock it out.

A nice, thorough test. Unfortunately, their methodology is off - they used the same lens on all three cameras, and cropped the 6k C500ii footage down to S35mm to match the frames for comparison.

So none of it actually shows the advantages of the larger-format sensor (which are higher resolution and a smaller noise pattern), so sadly we'll have to wait a little longer to see what the C500ii's full-frame sensor can do.

As it stands, this is a nice summary of how it'll perform in S35mm mode though (which appears to amount to: "Good" but not quite "Alexa Good").
