FS7: Sony FX9 v Canon C500 mkII

My FS7 is built usually with for shoulder work with my 'EVF' (DP502) so far forward that I risk seeing it with a wide lens. My camera is lovely on the shoulder to operate.

The NGO thing I did in zambia the camera was just way too big - it was really hard to get in and out of the rental car, shoot from the car, or be low profile in any manner and heavy with Vlock and rig.

For my second trip there I tried a different approach with the cam not supported by the shoulder: EVF and side handle and plastic 18-200 with stabilisation. And it did work. (yes 80% of the work was on sticks).

Compact build with custom monsoon cover. https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsvmq4vF967/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Prefered build? No. Useful in some situations? Absolutely.

Is the bag an optional accessory . . :) .. but doesn't that get tiring holding the weight out in front of you.. even after 30 seconds .. an A7III on a Ronin SC is a killer after a few minutes ..

Everyhting about developing world docs is tiring for a 40+ white guy! Heat, monsoon. Its just a question of which tiring you want. Mainly we did interviews on nice little vinten sticks.

Wait until you're my age!

Sometimes you just have to improvise:

Monopod and a "flagpole holder" belt to take the weight off your shoulders and arms. Not the most elegant but more packable than an Easyrig.

YUP and you can do this with a Ronin S also + I'm a seventy year old white guy and not complaining . ( what does white have to do with it anyway?)

Well as a european Im less used to high sun levels to sun/heat.

I was often shooting at 200mm clearly not good with a Ronin.

Clearly any of considering the 500 or the FX9 should be able to work is which one is suited to our personal needs. Small light builds, shoulder builds whatever, we should be able to use our only experience and specific uses to work it out.. and of course doung our tests.. Ive been invited to try them by local dealers without even experess in making purchase!

So, getting back to C500 mkII v FX9... ...what will be a good B camera for the Canon? Do any of the current crop of Canon DSLRs or mirrorless cameras shoot Clog2?

No, just C-Log and it's uniquely implemented to each model; 1DC, 5D Mark IV, & EOS R. (XC10 and XC15 have it too, but not worthy.)

5D Mark IV has the highest quality with DPAF.

1DC looks the most cinematic (IMO) with no AF.

All eyes on 1DX Mark III in 2020.

Interesting... ...and needs careful thought.

It's kind of ridiculous, but I know the first thing producers will ask after I sell-in the C500mkII is, "how will it cut with the gimbal?"

C200 (the version without the EVF), seems like the obvious candidate. I just can’t see any of their little 8-bit options being able to keep up image-quality-wise.

Possibly, but it has no 10bit internal codec which is a drawback.

I went to the Sony FX9 demonstration by Alister Chapman in London today. The FX9 is a solid upgrade from the FS7; the sensor is better, ergonomics are better, the handle and the LCD/VF are better, but in other ways it just underwhelms. The much-lauded S-cinetone was meh, the recording options haven't moved on from when the FS7 came out five years ago and don't even try using a non-Sony E-mount lens. Overall, I left one step closer to returning to Canon.

If you'd be using a gimbal with a monitor/recorder attached to it then you could get 10-bit 422 out of the EOS R if no 4K/60p is fine. (If 60p is necessary then the 1DX is a must as far as the Canon stills cameras because the 1080p from Canon just won't cut it.)

There's always a spec requirement for an employer, but personally in 10+ years I still haven't seen a difference between 8-bit and 10-bit in any practical use unless you're going crazy in post-production. (RAW is where you see the tremendous benefit.)

And I think if there's any 8-bit cameras one has to choose it's the ones from Canon with a very strong Motion JPEG 500MB+ 422 codec. Anyone who has used the cameras knows how flexible it is, but it's too late for the universe's 8-bit stigma to be changed.
