Other: Sony FX9 19.5 Volt Power Option

It was just a matter of time before someone produced a DC/DC 19.5 Volt power option for the FX9 that allows shooters to use there own existing 12-16 volt Anton Bauer or Sony/Sony clone V Loc batteries. Cost a little more and more elegant than my $11.00 solution but hey no extra plugs to buy just plug it in and go.

My el-cheapo solution. Just add heat shrink and plugs.

Chris, Thanks for the info and the links.

How did you make a useable version of this?
Where did you get the plugs and what plug is used for the Camera side?
What did you put the transformer in ?

Sorry I'm not too hip to making electronic gadgets myself but it looks pretty simple.

Lenny I haven't actually made one up for an FX9 but have used these units in the past to power other equipment like signal converters. The camera side plug on the FX9 is the same one that is used on Sony Viao Laptop power supplies and should be obtainable from a PC repair place that fixes Sony Viao laptops. At worst you could buy an aftermarket Viao power supply and chop of the lead and use that. On the input leads you need to fit a D Tap plug to connect to your D Tap battery. I already use rails and a cheese plate with a V Loc adapter plate. With that sort of setup you could easily mount the DC/DC converter on the backside of the cheese plate. Using using parts like this or similar if you are starting from scratch:

Power supply if you can't get a plug:

Though seeing that Wooden Camera are now making this small neat 19.5v PS unit I don't know that I would go to the trouble of making up a 19 volt PS for the FX9 if you can now buy their unit off the shelf.

It would be great if someone produced a battery-back for the FX9 that powers through the contacts, same as the factory ext-unit and avoids powering through the little plug. But nothing like that was ever produced for the fs7, so unlikely it would be made for the FX9.

I wish Sony would produced an alternative FX9 ext-unit that does away with the receiver-slot and in that is smaller in size.

The one saving grace, is that if you have a sony battery in the camera, and then the brick v mount or hold mount n the back, then two things:

1. You can hot swap
2. If the dc tap falls out, the internal battery will take over.

What I have done in the past, EXs and FS7 to extend run times massively is to power via a home made double ended D tap to D Tap cable powering from a normal 12-16 volt V Loc battery by using the IDX SB-U98 battery, mounted normally of course. You just have to make sure your bridging D Tap to D Tap cable is wired in parallel NOT series. Connecting the V Loc via D tap to the D tap "Advanced CHARG"E port on the IDX SB-U98 in effect makes the SB-U98 into a massive battery. Increased in capacity by whatever V Loc you have attached. The D Tap charge port on the BP-U98 is designed to take in 16.8 volt from the IDX VL-DT1 charger. BTW you can charge most V Loc batteries via their D Tap connectors. In effect you are replacing the charger with a V Loc battery which fresh off the charger is about 16.8 volt for a good battery. Running like this the camera "sees" the BPU battery through it's connection pins and gives you an accurate voltage reading as it assumes it is reading the BPU battery. It is, it's just that this BPU battery has massive capacity. I've filmed all day at conferences like this when I've not wanted to connect to local mains because of power noise issues. I see no reason why this approach would not work on the FX9. The IDX SB-U98 also has the advantage of a second normal D Tap port along with a 5 volt USB port. Running this setup has allowed me to Hot Swap V Loc batteries should I need to. I can only ever remember one time I had to do this though because the run times available with a 160/190 Watt Hour battery feeding a U98 are so long that battery consumption isn't generally on my mind when shooting. There are other dual D tap BPU type batteries out there that can do the same job. On eBay there are a host of single and dual D Tap portable chargers that can charge these batteries, V Loc or BPU in situ if you have mains power available so that that if you have to break off sticks you already have a fully charged BPU battery on the camera.
