Sony FX30: an aps-c FX3

gotta say, the fx30 is basically what I wanted from the a6xxx line. I was hoping for $1300-1500 with 4k60 and a 6K sensor for cropping in and getting true 4K. I had concerns about the image processing and codecs they would put on such a camera. but this guy gets proper readout, oversampling, all-intra, etc, and a 4k120 mode

for extending the macro and telephoto reach of my E lenses, it's pretty cool that you can record 4K with a 2.4x FF crop factor

I want to order an FX30. Heck, I want to order an FX3. Like others, what I really want is an FX60. I like FF and have quite a few lenses, but really S35 like the FS700 and FS7 are just fine for most of what I need. As much as I want UHD 60P for gimbal use and smaller lighter 2 cam interviews, I don't need another camera so I'm waiting and putting the funds towards the building.

I wonder just how big a difference low light will be between the FX30 and FX3

probably about 2 stops worse than fx3 in low light? at the very least 1. the fx30 will probably be at my noise limit at iso 10000 whereas the fx3 looks great at 12800. but the fx30 will look better at 2500 and 5000 than the fx3 does

personally, I'm putting a hold on non-essential gear purchases for now because I'm a little concerned about all this AI business and I'd like to see what happens with that. maybe the hype is overblown, or maybe the parts of my business that will be unaffected are the ones that could benefit most from this extra/macro/telephoto camera (namely, weddings). and sure, it's only $1800. but I don't really need it, and for the next 6-12 months I think I'd rather pause non-essential spending in general and keep an eye on how technology develops. otherwise I'd definitely order an fx30 right now

CVP plan to have their full length image quality tests on their Vimeo page soon comparing the following: FX30, FX3, A7IV, Fuji XH2S & BMPCC6K:

However if you skip to the specified image quality timestamps listed below, CVP & ProAV TV do have some quick comparisons of the image quality, latitude, ISO, etc. of the FX30 compared against the cameras I listed above.

Is there any way to frame-sync two of these? The price is so cheap, I'm tempted to try and build a Hoytema-style Day-for-Night rig out of a pair of them.

Some similar type comparisons to some of these cameras, not the FX30 yet are already popping up. Some interesting observations amongst them.

Sony Alpha Rumors says A7RV will be announced by the end of the month and will have an updated sensor with the same - or almost the same - 63 MPX pixel count as A7RIV. Which probably means RV will have 8K and ... some other stuff. A1 may not have all the video features that R5C has but RV should. I think.

personally, i feel like the fx30 is more exciting than what i anticipate from the a7rv.

firehawk, i'd personally be more interested in the fx6 than an fx60

I think a $3,500 RV that is basically an R5 without any overheating and with some special Sony extras will be well received and establish a new standard in the entry level pro market in both stills and video.

Who else would likely get an FX60 over FX6?

If an FX60 came out with the same feature set as the FX6 I would be very tempted to sell my FX6 for it. Things that would hold me back would be how much cropping 4K120 would have and how much performance would suffer in low light or at higher gain/ISO.

My thoughts exactly

I seriously doubt it. I believe that frame capture itself has to be synched. each frame has to be exposed at the exact same time. without aligning the cameras, each frame could be captured up to a 24th of a second off from the other camera
Perhaps i’ll test it out.

The 1/24th drift is after 1hr of independent clocking, no?

if you have the two cameras hardwired to an external clock, it should sync close enough?

No, what I'm saying is that even if the cameras are synced via timecode, that doesn't mean that each frame is exposed at the exact same millisecond. There can be a slight difference in exposure timing but still be within tolerance for audio sync. But this technique calls for combining multiple images, and if they're even just a little offset from each other, the result will be blurry

How do you shoot this then?

Well, it won't be an R5 clone. Allegedly, it will have a crop in 8K. The size of that crop, i.e., the number of pixels read, is yet unknown. If it has the same pixel count as RIV, then in full readout, it's 9504 x 6336, whereas 8K in R5 is 8192 x 4320. That would make for bit of a crop, but not too much of one.

Most other specs, such as codecs, have not been leaked. The announcement is on the 26th.

Booooooring

Also only 24p in 8k

Could it offer less of what people on this thread actually want?
