Sony FX3 camcorder registered - 8K?

Apparently S-Cinetone is coming for A7SIII on 25th Feb.

I've scan watched a bunch of FX3 "review" videos but as yet can't find any info as to if the noise reduction can be set to off (like FX6) rather than minimum (like A7SIII). Anyone know? It looks a reasonable camera for a gimbal (how I'd use it) or drone but FX6 will remain my next planned purchase. Might pick up a FX3MkII when it gets e-VND.

I noticed the FX-3 has a "W" and a "T" around the shutter button as to denote some kind of powered zoom capability. Interesting...

I hope they have waveform and shutter angles since this is more of a cinema camera. I do not know if I would want to give up a viewfinder given that the LCD was seen as the weakest part of the A7sIII.

There's a little lever by the shutter that looks like you'll be able to move it left and right (W and T) when operating with compatible lenses, or probably for clear image zoom as well (not the first time, it's a cool option).

Its a simple little list.
-be able to expose correctly
-be able to see your composition
-be able to put it in a little bag
etc

With no EVF, no ND, and a large tree sticking out the top one just has a reicipe for dissapointment.

Bought.

But I shoot that way now with my GH5 and GH5S. I shoot indoors so do not need viewfinder or ND. The GH5 has the XLR unit on top plus mic. Ninja V on tripod. The GH5S has a Ninja V on its tripod. Both set with touch focus in manual focus setting. Never use continuous auto focus or viewfinder. Other than the fact I want large depth of field so M4/3 is fine for theatre shoot the FX3 arrangement would work great. I have never used either hand held so do not need stabilizer either. Really, when I shoot the family birthdays etc I use my Sony AX53 camcorder a lot more useful. Excellent stabilizer and 20x zoom with good autofocus. Sometimes my DJI Pocket . There is a place for everything and not everything will work best in all situations

I'm a bit confused on this release as well. As a FS7 & a7sIII owner... scratching my head a bit with this. The VF on the a7sIII is actually pretty darn good (for what it is). Not sure why Sony decided on releasing this...

Surely, the next move from Sony (if they are listening) is a plug & play EVF based on the one on the A7S3 and just a hot shoe beneath it...but something that could articulate would be good. They could give the job to an intern - they already have all the key bits designed - it just needs pulling together.

It has Cinema Line on it!!! It must be worth it!

Hopefully I'm not veering too far off topic (qualifying as "too far" on dvxuser is pretty challenging :) ), but considering your FS7 and a7sIII, what do you see as your next purchase? Let's assume we can all resume getting out on a regular basis. Would you upgrade your FS7 to a FX6 or FX9? Do you need/want something that fills the space between your two current cameras?

And if you do want something in-between, what features would you want on a camera sort-of like the FX3?

My god. No user LUTs on the fx3. No timecode. And no ND. Those maniacs!

Other than multiple mounting points, why would one buy this over an A7SIII (which will soon have Cinetone so that's out)?

This is a great question, Jim. To be candid, I had pre-ordered the FX6 with my dealer when it was first announced - thinking it would replace my FS7. But because of the pandemic, I decided to hold on to my $ a bit longer... as there just wasn't (nor still is currently) demand for anything my FS7 can't do. I then got the a7sIII because it fits the bill for many of my smaller jobs... and should make my life a bit simpler - a small little run -n - gun camera perfect for lots of b-roll, coverage that can go from sticks to gimbal , etc quickly. In many odd ways, (ie white balancing when shooting Slog3cine) it's an upgrade to my FS7. And I've been "converted" to the AF this little beast can do (as someone who only ever used AF when shooting stills).

So... what do I want next? For starters, I want the same touch tracking ability using the LCD my A7sIII has that the FX6 doesn't. In other words, I want these manufacturers to quit parsing out features - to make us all buy 3 cameras instead of one. There was about a month when I looked very seriously at the s1H... because of the higher res stills AND video capability but just didn't want to start over with a new lens mount system. Not that I'm heavily invested in E mount (still have quite a few Canon EOS lenses), but I can see becoming more invested in the future IF a company like Sony will deliver. What Sam often says holds pretty true...

decent ergonomics (I came of age with old ENG Beta camcorders) - or at least easy to make ergo without a bunch of crap
variable eND with dual ISO - preferably with control over the NR at higher ISO's
4:2:2 internal codec to inexpensive cards with no aliasing - preferably also with "raw" out without having to purchase some stupid "back"
e mount locking system - to possibly eliminate need for rails / support with certain lenses
accurate VF with at least HD resolution, good peaking, waveform
s35 without crop (assuming everything is going FF in the near future) - I'm certainly ok with s35 only

That's a quick start.... I'm sure I'm forgetting others...

Not much reason though the FX3 is cheaper than buying an A7S3 plus the top handle/audio module separately.

Not sure why they got rid of the EVF.

I think we'll see it soon. Hopefully Sony comes up with its own 12 bit codec similar to BRAW.

The A7S3 with something like BRAW internally and E-ND's would be great. Of course if it has a 6k sensor that would meet still photography needs to and just be the ultimate all in 1 package. One day...

I refer you to Vik's point...it has Cinema Line on it so it must be worth it!

Another example of marketing over substance.

This is true and if I didn't have an A7SIII then I might get the FX3 instead.

But I don't personally need the audio module or top-handle, at least not 98% of the time I use this camera.

Meanwhile, having a built-in EVF is beautiful in terms of reduced rigging. And if you want to compare cost, that may make the A7SIII the winner.

Lastly, I think that (for now) the A7SIII is more known to clients who know mirrorless cameras because the a7sii inexplicably remains popular. The FX line is new and I've only started to see posts requesting the FX9

You bought an fx3?

I was fooling :)

Fundamentally it actually looks like a hugely competent camera, but I just get so hung up on 'my rules' of wanting to see what im doing, not having a poacket full of scratched ND and all that boring stuff.

Spent all of yesterday fighting piddly little screens in the sun having gone for monitor free rigging to try and be agile (cos the clients shot list was just too long) The agility was not worth it; footage is poor. I remember why I bolt al that crap to my camera now. (was shooting FS7 onboard monitor and Z6 on the movi pro)

It's funny (but not surprising) how the usual suspects are exaggerating the differences between the a7siii and the fx3 to boost sales.

Nofilmschool writes:
Our initial impression of the FX3 is if you're frustrated by the lack of I/Os on the a7s III or want longer record times, the FX3 is the option for you.

Does the FX3 have any I/Os that the a7siii doesn't have?

I'm more inclined to agree with EOSHD's assessment:
Sony really excelled themselves this time. The FX3 is $400 more than the A7S III for less camera!

But to be fair, multiple mounting points and a fan are steps in the right to direction

PS the hoopla about the dedicated WB and ISO buttons is so freaking overblown. I'm very happy with my controls on my a7siii, partly due to the large number of programmable custom buttons which are dinky but give me physical access to really useful functions. Seems that the fx3 has fewer buttons, no?

Armando Ferreira made a short with FX-3 (starts at 5:40). Plus, there is a bunch of reviews out.

Yes, it has that.
